For a limited time, you can transfer and redeem only 3,000 American Express Membership Rewards points for a free one-way coach ticket. I’ll illustrate the process to calculate the number of points required and transfer enough points to get a one-way coach ticket for only 3,000 American Express Membership Rewards points.
How To Get A One-Way Coach Ticket For 3,000 Points
British Airways only requires 4,500 Avios points for one-way tickets on short routes. The key thing to know about this option is this point requirement is on short distances, think New York to Montreal or Miami to Atlanta. I redeemed my first British Airways Avios points for a free ticket from Atlanta to Dallas for only 7,500 Avios points in coach. This was a slightly longer distance that what we’ll use in this example.
You can check the amount of Avios points required by going to the British Airways Award Calculator here.
American Express is offering a limited time 50% bonus on Membership Rewards points transferred to British Airways through May 31, 2012. Normally the points transfer at a 1:1 ratio from American Express to British Airways. With this promotion they transfer at a 1:1.5 ratio. So you only need to transfer 3,000 Membership Rewards points to British Airways to get enough Avios points for a one-way coach ticket.
How To Transfer American Express Transfer Process
Step 1) Navigate to your American Express Membership Rewards account and select the transfer points option
Step 2) Select the British Airways transfer option; notice the 50% transfer bonus through May 31
Step 3) Enter your desired amount of British Airways Avios points (in this case 4,500)
Step 4) Verify how many American Express Membership Rewards points are needed through the British Airways award calculator (in this case only 3,000)
Step 5) Validate your transfer request and check out
How To Book
You can now book your ticket since you have 4,500 British Airways Avios points needed for a free one-way coach ticket.
- Check British Airways Avios calculator to determine the number of avios required

Bottom Line
The best part about this promotion is you can book a one-way coach ticket for only 3,000 American Express Membership Rewards points. There are a ton of routes that qualify for the low mileage amount.
We hope this was helpful enough for you to book your own 3,000 point coach ticket. If you need help with more complex bookings, check out our award booking service page to see if we can help you book that dream award.

I think your title should match what you’re getting at. Otherwise, it’s a bit misleading. Throw the “one-way” in the title 🙂
Hi Infamousdx – Was not trying to mislead. The first sentence had the one-way reference in it. One-way thrown in the post title.
taxes for 4 tickets to canada was 232.00 36000 points
Hi Gary – I assume that a round trip cost. Is that correct? Did you book over the phone or online?
The Avios calculator says $0 in taxes in fees, but when you actually go to book the award online it’s $128.21 per one way ticket. (Unless there is a way to get around that?) So still a good award, but not as amazing.
Hi rl – Thanks for reporting back. That is likely due since Montreal is international. If you try a US location from US location the fees will be very small – a few bucks.
round trip, going to Chicago instead 60000 avios so 40000 mr points and 20.00 booking fee thanks
for 4 tickets, sorry
