  6. I like using BA miles to book short haul tickets that cost a good amount of cash. For example, I am flying Kyoto to Tokyo ($600 for 2 people or $200+ via the bullet train) for 9000 avios (which were from 6000 AMEX MR points) and $5. Simply amazing.

  32. as a government employee it is crucial to book hotels super early – before the rate goes up or dissappears. Sometimes it is available, for example on a friday and sunday, but not for the saturday night stay. for example, the rate will be 100-250-100. Sometimes a call to the manager of the hotel and a simple request to honor the government rate for all three nights will do the trick. the lesson: it never hurts to ask.
