The 100,000 bonus offer for the Platinum American Express came and went this week. I had a good experience with getting in on the offer quickly. If you were lucky enough to get in on this offer you could be on your way to earning 100,000 American Express Membership Rewards points. While the offer is gone, my card just arrived. It arrived very quickly in only 2 days.

Now I have to think through how to meet the spending and what are the best benefits to start using.

Bonus With Spending Threshold

Earn 100,000 after spending $3,000 in three months. I’ll likely hit this with my first trip of the year.

There are a number of ways to meet minimum spend. What’s your plan?

Benefits Can Be Rewarding

The first two benefits I’m going to use are the club lounge benefit and the $200 airline credit.

I went ahead and designated American Airlines as my airline of choice to receive the credit with. Reports are that American Airlines gift cards are credited back as part of the $200 airline fee. So I’ll give this a try. Make sure you choose carefully because your airline choice will stick with you for the entire year.

In addition to the airline credit, I also activated my priority pass select membership so that I can enter over 600 airline lounges worldwide.

The card also comes with some great benefits like the $100 credit for global entry, no foreign transaction fees and the ability to transfer your Membership Rewards points to some great partners like Singapore Airlines, Delta and British Airways. There is a current bonus with transfers to British Airways, but I likely won’t receive the bonus in time to take advantage of the transfer bonus. So I”ll likely hold on to the newly minted points until I have a specific award redemption or a lucrative transfer bonus comes along.

Bottom Line

I’m excited that I was able to get in on this offer. It pays to act fast with these lucrative deals.

Did you get in on the offer or miss this one? How are you going to meet minimum spend and what benefits are you most excited about?

Comments

  1. Did you previously have the card, and if so, when did you cancel it? Reason I asked is I’m gearing up for another crack – I cancelled the card in Feb 2011.

  2. I got my card too, and wow, what a waste of paper and packaging. I’m not a super tree-hugger, but this was excessive, especially since you register for everything online anyhow.

Since I already have Global Entry, do you see an issue with paying for someone else’s application?

  3. Got in on the offer as well – hoping the card arrives tomorrow (received the email card was shipped and should arrive in 2-3 biz days) and gotta figure out the spend as well. Cheers!

@Simon, I think you’d be fine applying for a new card since it’s been over 12 months.

  4. I got my card yesterday. I also designated my card for AA and will be buying GCs very soon. Was hoping to get this as a targeted offer for a while now so I jumped on this when my bro mentioned he saw it on SlickDeals.

  5. Amex uses UPS to ship the card and requires a signature, at least in my case. Yesterday the UPS man showed up early. This time I got off work early and he arrived late. Oh well, I now have the card!

    What’s your first trip?

  6. Got my UPS Next Day Air fancy packaging yesterday. Pretty darned excited about it. Now to wait for a 75K PRG Business Amex offer to make a great partnership.

Regarding Global Entry: I don’t live close to an interview location but will be flying to SFO in a couple of weeks. Can you request specific dates/times when you fill out the Global Entry application? I could do it there after I land and before I get my car.

  7. Got mine yesterday, as well! I am in a Delta hub, so I did pick Delta. Since I’m gold, I can probably only buy mileage boosts with the $200, but better than nothing. First thing I did was pay for global entry. I paid my car insurance (about $500) and am trying to figure out how else to hit the $3k. I think I can do it! Thanks again for sharing!

  8. Applied on Monday night and got the card yesterday thru UPS next day. What a service… Will use it to buy some GCs then load them into Bluebird

  9. Applied Mon, card arrived Wed, called the number on the back and confirmed 100K offer. Yes! But I didn’t get the nice magazine like Fabio did (above). I already have the United Club Card but 100K for $250 (accounting for $200 credit) is a no-brainer. Since I fly mainly UA I won’t use the Priority Pass Select much. I have to keep reminding myself, 100K for $250. Bought a $2K int’l ticket today on this card for a trip at the end of Jan and will buy $1K of Vanilla Reloads at my local CVS this weekend to complete the $3K.

  10. @Simon oh yah duh…I’m an idiot – I saw 2011 and wasn’t thinking…apologize for that. Since the offer was pulled I would wait till a decent offer from AMEX arrives but someone more familiar with their process can comment. I know for Chase I applied for three cards within two months and just had to reallocate credit between two of the cards.

  11. While I was waiting on hold to activate with a real person, a short ad mentioned that AMEX GCs can be had without service charge online. Once I was all signed up, I confirmed with the friendly rep my intro terms and spending requirements, then asked if the GCs I’d just heard about count toward the spend. He said they did, so I bought $2000 of them. No reason to be greedy (or blatant), just accelerating the process and easing the pressure on simultaneous spend requirements.

  12. Can some one tell me where on the
AMEX site do I need to go and register my airline and sign up for priority select?

  13. @johnny
go to americanexpress.com/platinum, log in, go to “Benefits Enrollment” tab, proceed to enroll in benefits, enjoy said benefits

  14. Applied, received card two days later, put $3,075 in purchase’s on the card, waited for the purchase to post, paid bill online early, and overnight the 100,000 bonus points have posted early and well before the statement issue date of 1/25.
