Delta sent out an email to their SkyMiles members reminding them of their new WiFi option for mobile phones for as low as $1.95 per flight.

This is a great option if you have a smartphone such as an iPhone and are looking to send some iMessages inflight without having to spend a bunch on WiFi.

With an in-flight Wi-Fi Mobile Pass available for as low as $1.95, it’s even easier to stay connected in the clouds. Send and receive mobile messages via apps like Apple iMessage, Blackberry Messenger, WhatsApp, Google Hangouts and Facebook Messenger. Or, you can email and browse the web — all from your smartphone. Purchase a Wi-Fi Mobile Pass once above 10,000 feet to start surfing.

Bottom Line

This is similar to Southwest’s option which allows passengers to Send/Receive iMessages In-Flight For Only $2, which they launched last month.

Delta’s new offering doesn’t specify if the service will allow only for messaging apps, or if you get access to the full internet as well, so if anyone has tried this, please feel free to comment below.

Have you taken advantage of this option before or do you prefer to buy the WiFi for your laptop?

  1. I’ve always enjoyed the mobile prices…especially with a tethering option on my phone. Full service, half the price.

  2. I guess they are moving in the right direction and, depending upon what service is REALLY available, $1.95 is OK. I personally do not use an iphone or similar, but DO use a notebook when flying. I’ve more or less given up on internet connectivity because 1) it is too expensive, 2) the bulk of the several fleets still do hot have it and 3) even when they are so wired, the reliability sucks. In the end, flying Wifi is a nice idea, but well ahead of its time. I know that it costs the carriers and providers a lot to equip each airplane, but until the service becomes far more reliable, their business will likely be limited to the very rare user who will tolerate a lot of frustration, or a first time user who wants to experiment and is willing to accept the near universal “No Refunds Policy.” My method is to pre-load whatever work materials I need, update incoming email just before boarding, do my work and then download my work shortly after landing. As an aside, device texting while flying is perfectly OK with me, but I hope we NEVER see a cabin full of live voice chattering pax. Ever.

  3. Well it clearly says you can browse the web so I guess you get it all if using a smartphone. Just not sure what the “as low as” means. $1.95 for what flight duration?
