American Express has just announced two interesting new credit cards for everyday spending that will help fill a huge gap in the Membership Rewards program.

It used to be that only the premium cards like the Platinum Card® from American Express or even the Business Green Rewards Card from American Express could earn Membership Rewards points. But now that is changing with this announcement.

The only no fee card I know currently earns Membership Rewards points is the Blue card from American Express, but that card doesn’t allow you to transfer the Membership Rewards points to airline or hotel partners. So it is really only a place to “hold” your Membership Rewards points until you pick up a premium card that offers full benefits of the Membership Rewards program.

I actually downgraded my Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express to this card a few years ago. It came in really handy when I cancelled my American Express® Premier Rewards Gold Card, where I had earned hundreds of thousands of Membership Rewards points thanks to the 3x points on airfare with the Gold card.

When these cards come out, I’m definitely interested, especially since I have a large bank of Membership Rewards points “waiting” for me to get the ability to transfer the points again to an airline or hotel partner.

Amex Everyday Preferred

The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express You’ll earn 1x points per dollar on every day spending, 3x at US supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year in purchases (then 1x), 2x at gas stations and everytime you use it 30 times in a month (30 swipes), you’ll earn a 50% bonus on all the points you earn that month. This card also comes with a 15,000 bonus point signup offer after spending $1000 in 3 months.

Amex Everyday

With the Amex EveryDay® Credit Card from American Express You’ll earn 2x points per dollar at US supermarkets up to $6,000 a year. All other purchases will earn 1 point per dollar. This card also comes with a 10,000 bonus point signup offer after spending $1000 in first 3 months.

Bottom Line

The Amex Everyday and Amex Everyday Preferred do truly look like great cards to carry in your wallet for everyday spending.

  1. I’m curious, why did you choose to downgrade your SPG Amex to the Blue Everyday card a few years back? Do you have an old post on it?
