The other day I needed to book an Air France award, so I fired up the Airfrance.us website, found low level award availability on my home town airline (which is a partner of Air France) and booked the flight within a few moments. But within 10 hours I decided to cancel the flight. Luckily, Air France now allows free cancelations of award tickets within 24 hours of booking. So if you ever need to cancel an Air France award, do it within the first 24 hours so you can get all of your miles and taxes back for free.
Here’s a simple overview of how to book and cancel an Air France award ticket.
Booking An Air France Award
The easiest way to book an Air France award is to use the Airfrance.us website. Searching for availability is easy when they show you the calendar availability. If you don’t have Air France miles, here are two easy options to get them:

Select the options that work for you and confirm your flight.
Air France Confirmation
Once you enter in your information and confirm the purchase, you’ll receive confirmation in email but it will also be saved to your Air France profile. The confirmation number will show up in the section where the red box is in the picture below.
I then called my home town airline and gave them the ticket number to look up the reservation. I had them add my loyalty number from my hometown airline to the reservation so I could get elite benefits, etc. To my surprise my return flight was upgraded instantly. So on a low level partner award, I was upgraded to First Class for free.
How To Cancel Air France Award For Free
The cancellation of the award can be done for free within the first 24 hours from booking the award. To cancel, simply do the following:
- Call Air France Flying Blue – North America (+1) 800 375 8723
- Use other options on contact us page
- Provide them your record locator found at top of confirmation
- Request the ticket be cancelled the miles be put back into your account
The miles and taxes should be put back in your account in a few days but not instantly like other airlines.
Bottom Line
Air France now allows free cancelations of award tickets within 24 hours of booking. Make sure you cancel your flight if you need to within the first 24 hours of booking so you can get all of the miles and taxes put back into your account.

I’m confused, are you saying your international flight, you were upgraded for free and not domestic sector of Delta? If so, are you Delta Diamond or Platinum?
Hi DL123 – sorry for any confusion. The ticket I booked was a domestic ticket on Air France’s partner here. Then I added my Platinum number to the Air France reservation by calling the partner airline. Was instantly upgraded on one leg.
