Delta elite status comes with complimentary upgrades to some pretty nice seats. From domestic First Class to International Business Class on domestic routes, its nice when status pays off. But it doesn’t always work out that way.

I recently found myself in my second all time worst seat, and it happened to be next to the restroom on a Delta flight onboard regional jet. I could literally reach out and touch the restroom door.

My Second Worst Delta Seat

The prize for worst seat ever has to be my experience in the guillotine seat on Delta’s MD88 only inches from a jet engine.

Bottom Line

Delta elite status can pay off with upgrades to some pretty nice seats. But it doesn’t always work out that way.

  1. Have flown that seat many times, even as a DM. But getting seat 13B and getting home sure beats the seat in the airport (or in the overnight hotel) every time.

  2. gotta say JEM stole my thunder; i guess among a certain elite group, having discussions of the “best” seat is compelling and perhaps will keep alive a blog idea, and perhaps i’m just tiring of the whole frequent flyer theme that takes it to the ultimate level, but i wish to get from point A to B safely, in some comfort, and if i’m staring at an engine or close enuf to touch the bathroom door, seriously, why do i care? I know, i’ll turn in my card carrying “card”… 🙂

  3. Death has resulted in passengers sitting in that seat on a MD-80 type plane. The engineswere spooling up when there was a catastrophic failure. This happened here in the USA. The other passengers were not in danger becase it happened on the ground, not pressurized. The pilot announced to passengers not to panic, it was routine. Pilot was wrong.

  4. Any seat where the person in front of me leans all the way back and spends the entire flight in my lap.

  5. I would take any of those seats over being seated next to a sick guy hacking away. This happened twice in the last 2 years – once I was able to re=seat to a just vacated seat without IFE, the other time I ended up getting sick a few days later. Sitting next to sick people on a long flight is the worst.

  6. @Charles, a lot of things, in isolated incidents, have resulted in fatalities. The increased risk of sitting in that seat (as opposed to any other) is so negligible that it makes your argument just plain silly. It’s like a 24hr news network… when you need to fill time (or in this case, publish blog posts), anything can be exaggerated for a story.
