According to Delta it is, because starting August 8th, Delta will be ending it’s Duty Free Sales program due to lack of demand. (I can’t remember the last time, I’ve bought some duty-free in-flight, can you?)
Here’s a timeline of when their duty free items will be ending over the next few days:
- Caterers have been instructed to cease boarding Duty Free carts and carriers on all flights departing the U.S. after 12:01 AM ET Friday, Aug. 8.
- Flights returning to the United States from Europe, Africa, the Middle East and South America on Aug. 8 will have Duty Free items onboard. Flight attendants are instructed to not sell these items.
- Caterers in Asia and Interport markets have been instructed to cease boarding Duty Free carts and carriers on all flights departing after 12:01 AM Narita time Saturday, Aug. 9. If you have Duty Free items onboard after this time, please do not sell them.
Bottom Line
Personally, I still think even with the duty free prices, a lot of the items are still over-priced, and who wants to hear the flight attendants trying to sell items on red-eye flights to Europe, when all you want to do is try to get some sleep.

I’ve bought cologne sample sets and Delta branded stuff (model airplanes, etc) onboard…will be sad to see them go…
With the eception of hard liquor – Duty free everywhere is a complete rip off. These companies get government subsidies to see their wares at a higher price than they are on the street!
DFS completely rips off Asian visitors in their stores. WIne sold there can be foundin the local grocery stores 30 – 70% less than in their duty free stores.
Actually really happy to hear this. I agree that it was never a good value and really not a fan of fragrance on the plane.
