Back in 2012, my brother, my Dad and I were out on our local golf course and had a bright idea. Why don’t we take a week out of our busy lives to play some of the most challenging and historical golf courses in the world, 4 courses on the British Open Rotation? This was a good idea and turned out to truly be a once in a lifetime golf trip filled with more “best golf rounds” than you should have in one lifetime.

But it brought around a challenge, how do we assure we’ll get tee times on all of these courses? The last thing we wanted to do was travel all the way to Scotland and England and not have a tee time. Plus, we all have busy lives with little time to focus on planning the trip.

Ever since we started sharing details of our trip, a constant question we get is how to book an international golf trip with a booking service. Thankfully, one of us reached out to a golf trip planning company and they took care of all the details for us.

How I Planned An International Golf Trip To Scotland

I researched all types of golf booking companies, each have their own specialty and customized approach. So if you wanted to see 4-6 of the top courses in Scotland, you could request a starting point of Manchester and play some top courses like Royal Birkdale, Royal Lytham St Annes or Royal Liverpool.

Then you could fly (or drive like we did to see the scenery) up to Scotland and play one of seven other rotation courses like St Andrews Old Course, Carnoustie (Carnastie), Muirfield, Musselburgh, Royal Troon, Turnberry or Prestwick.

Once you share your trip preferences, a customized itinerary will be created and presented to you for approval. The golf booking service will also take care of all the details from airfare, hotels, car rentals or even cruises. The service can even plan lunches at some of the most historic golf clubhouses. For example, we had an awesome lunch at Royal Lytham St Annes in the Club House overlooking the 18th green.

We decided to have them plan everything down to a few of the golf day lunches with the exception of airfare because we booked that using American Airlines miles to fly on British Airways First Class. You can even set a range of hotel prices that you’d like to pay and then options will be presented in that range. We were thrilled with our hotel in St Andrew’s the McDonald Rusacks Hotel St Andrews Scotland.

We had a front row view during happy hour of the 18th green at St Andrews Old Course. Hard to beat that view.

Once we landed on our itinerary, we had to do a few things to confirm the trip and the golf course booking. We provided a deposit for a portion of the total cost. Then we had to provide our golf course handicaps. Since one of our travelers didn’t have a handicap at a “home course” he was provided with a number of accredited internet handicap services to use for free. Then he simply had to record enough scores to establish a handicap before the submission.

A few months prior to the trip we received our final ultimate golf trip packet including all the confirmation numbers, maps, and details we needed to have a flawless golf trip.

All we had to do was focus on playing a good round of golf and enjoying ourselves.

Bottom Line

The cost of booking the trip with a golf booking service was a small price to pay to confirm our golf course tee times in advance, secure our travel options and get ready for the best golf trip of our lifetime. In fact, we had so much fun, we’re already thinking about which courses we want to play on our next trip.
