Delta Going Airbus – If It Ain’t Boeing…It’s Airbus

My head is spinning. Delta announced recently that they ordered Airbus 50 new wide body Airbus aircraft to replace their aging fleet of 767 and 747 Boeing planes. Northwest used to have both Boeing and Airbus airplanes in their fleet, and that is how Delta acquired their current 747 double decker Boeing planes along with their current line up of A330’s.

They also has about 18 orders for the new fuel efficient composite Boeing 787 plane. Not sure what the current status of the options is, but I imagine this order may place those in jeopardy.

According to Wikipedia, Delta has 13 747 and a total of ~95 767 planes.

Delta’s Airbus Order

  • 25 advanced Airbus A330-900neo

This is especially interesting due to the fact that Delta is attempting a hostile takeover of Boeing’s home city major international airport, Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

The 747’s will be retired by the end of 2017, so there are still a few more years where you can fly on a double decker Boeing plane with Delta. But there’s the old saying “If it ain’t Boeing, it ain’t going” and it ain’t going to be around forever, so if you want to fly one of these old Boeing wide body planes, better do so in the near future.

  1. I imagine Delta cancels those 787 orders/sells their production slots in the near future. Delta normally makes pretty logical and cost-efficient decisions regarding their airplanes and it makes no sense to order 787s and A350s. Wonder what kind of sweet deal Airbus gave Delta to get this purchase done.

  2. i hate airbuses but love Boeing, i have always wanted to fly a 747 but now i cant. screw airbus
