If This Is Delta Upgrade I Want A Downgrade

I’m not sure I ever thought I’d say that. But if this is a Delta upgrade I’d like a downgrade.

Earlier in the year Delta announced a big enhancement for their international fleet. They also announced improvements to their domestic fleet’s wifi system.

Delta Wifi Enhancement

Air-to-ground Technology Improvements

Short-haul domestic aircraft in Delta’s fleet with air-to-ground systems will be upgraded with Gogo’s next generation air-to-ground technology as it becomes available. Delta’s Boeing 717-200, MD-88 and MD-90 aircraft are slated to get the system and will also offer significantly upgraded speeds.

Terrible Wifi Speeds

But on a recent flight I saw no such improvement. In fact, the wifi was crawling along at a snails pace.

Bottom Line

This is as bad as the normal speed. I have to guess that this flight was not operated by an upgraded flight. Be on the look out for the upgraded wifi on your domestic and international flights in the future. This flight sure needed the upgrade.

  1. If I’m not mistaken, Delta made that announcement 4 DAYS ago, with a target completion date of mid-2016 (which is on the part of the graphic that was cropped out above).

While that was, in fact, “earlier in the year”, I think maybe you should be SLIGHTLY more patient…

  2. Currently Delta uses GoGo’s uses a cellular technology which has very limited speed. This announcement (and the GoGo earnings call – which is public, feel free to listen) spoke about the new 2KU technology which is MUCH faster but won’t be installed for a while since they have quite a backlog.

    Patience, sir.

  3. I stopped using Gogo some time ago because the price/value inequity. It’s fallen into the category of the airphone with the $4/minute charges. 🙂

I use them to access the airline website while flying, and their service is consistently useless.

  4. Gogo’s speed is horrible. My download/upload speeds are almost identical to yours. I’ve complained and received credits. I’d rather see them fix the problem, but that obviously is being delusional.

  5. It’s ridiculous on long flights with a lot of business travelers. They really need to address this and hoping their “enhancement” does the trick. #notholdingmybreath
