Skift Travel came out with a story today focusing on the most expensive hotel locations around the world for U.S. travelers in 2014.  I though of the obvious cities that are generally the most expensive cities in the world: London? No. Tokyo? No. Paris? No. Sydney? No. So where are the hotels with the highest average room rates for U.S. travelers going abroad last year?

Punta Cana, Dominican Republic had the highest average nightly rates for U.S. travelers last year ($292), higher than London, Paris, and other major European tourist magnets in terms of cost in U.S. Dollars.

Including Punta Cana, Los Cabos, Mexico ($257) and Cancun, Mexico ($236) were the three Latin American destinations ranking in Hotels.com list of the top 10 international cities with the most expensive room rates for U.S. travelers. London had the second most expensive rate ($268) and also had the highest year-over-year growth rate (10%).

They also had this graphic listing the rest of the top 10 most expensive room rates in the world for U.S. travelers:Screen Shot 2015-03-04 at 8.55.36 AMBottom Line:
I was in Punta Cana in 2014 the weekend before Christmas. While it was nice, it was hardly my favorite travel destination, especially when compared to some of the other amazing cities listed above.  I’m guessing that the average nightly rates in Punta Cana are seemingly high because most of the hotels are All Inclusive Resorts.

Who loves going to Punta Cana? Can anyone recommend an amazing All Inclusive Resort that will change my mind about Punta Cana? Or should I just stick to European travel?

  1. Florence? Really? Are they only counting chain hotels or high end hotels? I don’t think i’ve ever spent more than $120/night to stay in Florence.

  2. Ironic, I’m sitting in the lounge in PUJ as we speak. I saw your story headline and said I bet it’s punta cana. Every hotel I’ve seen is all inclusive which drives up price. I think they don’t have nearly as many as cancun or places like that so they can keep prices higher. Of course, after food and the barrels of rum I consumed the $400 per night was probably actually around $50.
