Delta Extends Baggage Guarantee: More 2,500 SkyMiles Opportunities

We wrote about how Delta announced a baggage guarantee, where if your checked bag doesn’t arrive within 20 minutes to the carousel, you’ll receive 2,500 Delta SkyMiles. When it was first announced, it was only a test benefit which was set to expire on March 31, 2015.

However, the good news is that Delta will be extending this benefit permanently, similar to what Alaska Airlines offers.

Terms & Conditions:
20-minute Bag-to-Claim Guarantee bonus-mile offer valid on all domestic flights within the U.S. 50 and Puerto Rico, marketed and operated by Delta Air Lines and Delta Connection® carriers. Itineraries that include codeshare flights are eligible as long as the final leg is marketed and operated by Delta Air Lines or a Delta Connection carrier. Customers must be a SkyMiles member in good standing at the time of travel and award of bonus miles to be eligible and must submit a request form with Delta upon completion of travel. Requests must be submitted via delta.com/bagsontime within three days of flight’s arrival. Limit one request per passenger per outbound or return travel regardless of number of checked bags; requests for multiple trips must be submitted separately. Time to baggage claim will be as measured by Delta’s baggage tracking system, where available. The time to baggage claim will be defined as time elapsed between aircraft door open and delivery of the bag to the baggage claim belt. Oversize and overweight baggage and special items are not eligible.

Bottom Line

I’ve rarely had my bags delivered in less than 20 minutes when flying Delta, so I look at this as a way to easily earn Delta SkyMiles. I’m glad Delta will be extending this as a permanent benefit, since it may help with getting bags faster.

  1. I had a situation when this first started, took 45 minutes from when plane landed to when bags came out at a 1 terminal airport. They even announced while we were waiting that there was an issue with the cargo door. I submitted the claim and they came back saying “our system tells us all was on time.” I followed up and never heard back. Real great “guarantee.”

  2. Its a joke. I have had bags late and not only did I not get my 2,500 miles but they never replied that they were not giving them to me. My wife was on the same flight and we waited for 60 minutes (DEN) for the bags and DL said they arrived with in 20 minutes. Her claim was denied in 48 hours. They may as well take the promotion down.
On the other hand in most locations that have sped up the process. Late DCA flights were 45+ minutes and now they are less than 20.
