When it comes to American Airlines, they are almost finished with their merger and are now focused on refining their schedule. The latest announcement comes to their regional service up on the East Coast. Here’s a look at what’s changing:

American Airlines

American Airlines will be adding four new domestic routes into their schedule later this year, adding more opportunities for customers to travel to and from its CLT and LGA airports. ·

  • Beginning Nov. 5, they’ll add twice-daily service between CLT and Springfield, MO (SGF), operated by Envoy with ERJ-145 aircraft. They currently serve SGF from DFW and ORD.
  • Beginning Nov. 5, they’ll add daily service between LGA and Akron, OH (CAK), operated by PSA with CRJ-200 aircraft. They currently serve CAK from CLT, DCA and PHL.
  • Beginning Nov. 5, they’ll add twice-daily service between LGA and Memphis, TN (MEM), operated by Republic with E-170 aircraft. They currently serve MEM from CLT, DFW, MIA, ORD, DCA and PHL.
  • Beginning Dec. 17, they’ll add twice-daily service between LGA and Jacksonville, FL (JAX), operated by Republic with E-170 aircraft. They currently serve JAX from DFW, MIA, ORD, CLT, DCA and PHL.

Bottom Line

Some of these new routes are interesting choices on American’s part, and I think time will tell if they’ll be able to survive. For instance,  LaGuardia to Memphis is a route Delta serves twice a day and LaGuardia to Akron, OH is served by Southwest Airlines, so we’ll see how well American can compete on these new routes.

  1. The LGA-CAK route on Southwest is coming to a close. United is also adding EWR-CAK as well. With CLE only an hour away, it’s a unique scenario for airlines there.
