How I Saved 5% On My Recent Hyatt Stay

I recently got in on the increased offers for the Gold Delta SkyMilesBusiness Credit Card and because of that had some minimum spending to hit with this card. Fast forward to last week when I was staying with Hyatt and used this card to help hit my goal.

Once I checked out, I logged onto Amex account a few days later and was pleased to find that I had received 5% back from American Express for my Hyatt stay.

Hyatt amex 10%

The great news is you receive 5% back anytime you pay with an Amex open credit card and a few merchants including Hyatt Hotels (including Andaz and Park Hyatt), FedEx, HP, and Hertz. If you have charges at any of those merchants, be sure to pay with your Amex Open card to get the 5% back!

Here’s how the savings works:

When you use your Business Card from American Express OPEN you get a 5% discount or 2 extra Membership Rewards points for every eligible dollar spent with OPEN Savings partners. If your Card is enrolled in the Membership Rewards program, the choice is yours. All other Cards will receive automatic discounts credited to your billing statement.

Some of the qualifying American Express Open cards include the following:

Bottom Line

Receiving 5% back on my recent Hyatt stay was a nice surprise for using one of my Amex Small Business cards, and I would encourage you to do the same for your next Hyatt stay.

  1. The FTU15 coupon from Frequent Traveler University is still available, and gives 10% off Hyatt gift cards. The order is processed directly by Hyatt, which means you can pay for the order with any Open Savings Amex card and still get the 5%. The electronic cards are delivered immediately, so I have even purchased them right before checking out, when I have a good idea what my final bill will be. You should be getting 15% off every time, not 5%.
Another thing to watch because it happened to me, is that my new Platinum Business card defaulted to 2x per dollar instead of the 5%, so I missed out on the discount the first time, so it’s a good idea to make sure your card is actually set up to earn 5%.

  2. I applied for both, the Gold Delta SkyMiles Business and the personal Platinum Delta Credit Card, on the last day, June 30th. I got the personal card but the Delta AMEX business was denied due to “you currently have the maximum number and type of American Express Card accounts that we allow.”

I have only 3 cards: the SPG business (OPEN), Costco, and the Everyday Preferred with AMEX. How many cards are considered maximum number for a person?

  3. @Kalboz- max of four credit cards (combined personal and business).

Can also have up to 4 charge cards.

  4. @Mike or whomever else: Do the Hyatt GC purchases count as double points with Ink card? If so, I’m wondering if I can pay my final hotel bill/room rate with the GC.
