Car service smartphone apps are gaining popularity as an alternative to traditional taxi cabs or getting behind the wheel of a car yourself.

You’re probably familiar with Uber, which is arguably the most well-known car service app. The app itself is revolutionizing transportation and the so-called “sharing economy.”

The app is reportedly worth $62.5 billion, making it one of the most valuable private companies. It’s not public yet, though Wall Street is watching the company closely for a possible IPO in the future.

The company also recently changed its logo, much to the surprise of many loyal users.

Not to mention, Uber had made headlines in recent months, lowering the price of its UberX service, which features regular sedans, instead of luxury vehicles and sport utility vehicles.

Uber’s competitor, Lyft, is also taking off. Lyft is worth over $5 billion, according to various news reports.

Though the company is quickly emerging as an alternative to Uber, especially for Uber users frustrated with the app’s frequent ‘surge pricing,’ where ride pricing may increase by 10-20 percent.

Finally, there is car service app Via. This usually involves sharing a ride with someone else who is nearby. But in exchange, you’ll receive a lower fare, at some $5 per ride.

Be sure to stay subscribed to the email lists of the car service apps, as they’ll occasionally offer various discounts. For example, Via recently offered rides for $2.75 for New York riders, which was the price of a subway ride.

If you haven’t signed up for Lyft yet, you can also do so via my referral and get $50 in free ride credit. If you still haven’t tried Uber yet, you can still get a credit towards your first ride with my referral link, here
