As we boarded the new Delta plane there was definitely the new plane smell. Soon after sitting down the flight attendant made an announcement confirming my suspicion while simultaneously crushing my hopes for the flight.

My New Delta Plane Only 3 Weeks Old
Flight Attendant: “Folks, this is a relatively new plane, it’s been in service now for about 3 weeks”

Weekly Flyer: {that’s great, new lighting, new seats, new smell, new entertainment systems, this is great!}

Flight Attendant: “as a result, the wifi is not yet installed, so you will just have to tell your boss your going to relax and enjoy the flight for the next hour or so”

Weekly Flyer: {Drat! There goes my plan for a productive flight}

Bottom Line

Flying on a new plane is hardly a problem, it’s actually very nice. The brand new A321 has been in service for only a few weeks. The new plane is great, except when you were planning to get a few work related items out though the advertised wifi that hasn’t been installed yet.

But the if you find yourself in this situation, the best thing to do is…sit back, relax, and enjoy the flight, but don’t forget to send Delta an online complaint letting them know if you were disappointed.

  1. I was on a “new” United plane last evening: DEN-LAX. The wifi was installed, but not the streaming entertainment. Yes, the wifi was installed, but it did not work. Had a drink instead.

  2. That’s odd that wifi wasn’t already installed. Was on a Delta 739 a few weeks ago, had been in service for 1 day. We were the third revenue flight. Certainly did have a “new” smell.

  3. Flew a new DL A321 yesterday from MCO-ATL. It was so new we had to take a delay so maintenance could look up if the non-retracted landing light would need to be fixed before departure (it didn’t). Also, the Flight Attendants and Gate Agents commented that the overhead bins were designed 2 inches two short, and therefore despite the picture in the back of the bins to store carry-ons sideways, they would need to be stored flat which caused all kinds of confusion. That wasted a ton of space, not to mention time during boarding. DL is trying to find a fix for that issue as it’s a serious problem. And yes, there was no wifi 🙁 These planes are a HUGE AVOID on my list for now.
