Ryanair finds itself under fire as the airline messed up their pilot scheduling which will result in the cancellation of about 50 daily flights for the next 6 weeks. This is due to the strict scheduling requirements by the Irish Aviation Authority, coupled by Ryanair currently changing its holiday year which starts in April to a traditional calendar year.

Per Bloomberg,

Ryanair Holdings Plc scrapped 82 flights on Sunday, the start of a six-week program of cancellations it’s making as it seeks to reduce a backlog of crew vacation required by Irish regulators before the end of the year.

“We have messed up in the planning of pilot holidays and we’re working hard to fix that,†Kenny Jacobs, Ryanair’s chief marketing officer, said in a statement Saturday.

In the statement, the Dublin-based carrier said it expected to cancel 40 to 50 flights daily, “with a slightly higher number this weekend.â€
Ryanair is mandated by the Irish Aviation Authority to bring time off for the staff in line with the calendar year from Jan. 1, requiring it to distribute the backlog before the end of the year.
With these regulations, Ryanair will find itself short staffed and will not be able to operate their full flight schedule. Details are unclear on which flights will be cancelled, whether it be those with lighter loads, or on routes where the airline has multiple flights a day.
If you do find yourself affected by this, Ryanair is offering full refunds or will be waiving fare differences if you’re looking to rebook on another Ryanair flight.
