Bed Bug Infestation at Major US Airport

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has reported a bed bug infestation at Terminal 4, which is the airline’s largest terminal home to both Southwest Airlines and American Airlines, which both have a hub here. The airport is in the midst of a Terminal Modernization project, however that’s going on over at Terminal 3.

When it comes to bed bugs, we know they’re quite common at major NYC hotels, on British Airways flights, and now at airports. These critters were found on several padded benches at the airport, and they have since been removed. We don’t usually hear about bed bugs in airports, but I’m not all that surprised, since there are so many travelers passing through each-day, some could have climbed out of carry-on luggage even!

Per AZ Central,

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport removed three padded benches at Terminal 4 because of a bedbug infestation, officials there said Wednesday.

The benches were in the pre-security area on Level 3 near America’s Taco Shop and Yogurtology. Sky Harbor officials say the infestation was contained to this area of the airport’s busiest terminal.

Sky Harbor also had bedbugs several years ago in a separate, padded seating area, officials said. The seating was immediately removed once the bedbugs were discovered.

  1. Just had a bed bug ‘find’ yesterday at Holiday Inn Paragould, AR. Funny thing no hotel Manager ever admits what it is, even when you take close up HD pics (with my key card info included). Guess they only believe what they want to believe.

  2. I came home with unwanted passengers after a Southwest flight in late November (Tucson to Sacramento), and now I’ve traveled back through the Tucson airport (no checked baggage this time) only to discover several bites after getting off the plane. These pests are more than a nuisance and are expensive to get rid of. Anyone else getting bit or finding bugs in their home after a flight (without hotel stays)? I think Southwest has a terrible problem.
