Delta announced they’ll be launching new daily nonstop service between New York’s John F. Kennedy and Mineta San Jose International Airport starting June 8, 2017. This route will be operated by one of their retrofitted 737-800’s which feature 16 First Class seats, an expanded 36 Comfort+ seats, and 108 seat in the Main Cabin.

Per Delta,

“We’ve heard loud and clear from our Bay Area customers that nonstop service to New York City is important to them, and we’re pleased to offer this new daily flight starting next spring,” said Ranjan Goswami, Delta’s Vice President, Sales-West. “In addition to New York City access, this flight enables convenient connections to dozens of cities at our JFK hub to the Northeast and internationally.

New York remains the most sought-after destination for Silicon Valley business and leisure travelers, and we enthusiastically welcome Delta Air Lines’ plans to add a new nonstop flight to JFK,” said San José Mayor Sam Liccardo. “We thank Delta for their confidence and investment in Silicon Valley’s Airport and wish the airline much success of this SJC-JFK route.”

These new flights are already loaded into their schedule and available for purchase now including redeeming SkyMiles.

I’m not all that excited with this new route, as JetBlue has long offered nonstop service between these two cities, and has better flight times, as they have an evening departure from JFK, whereas Delta decided on an early morning departure.

If you’re wondering why Delta is making these changes, I think it’s safe to look to JetBlue and they’ll feel they need to compete. Time will tell if this route will be one that can be sustained by both airlines from JFK.
