What It Was Like to be a Silver Medallion for a Month

I wrote Why I’m Excited to be a Silver Medallion on Delta, which explained my plan to effectively earn Platinum Medallion status for two years, by rolling over a bunch of MQM’s and failing feet the MQD requirement.

As a recap, what I did was I started 2018 as a Silver Medallion and with 58,000 MQMs. During the first few weeks I earned 7,000 MQMs which will put me around 65,000 MQMs. In the last couple months, I managed to spend $25,000 on my Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express, which gave me an additional 10,000 MQMs putting me at 75,000 MQMs as well as give me the Medallion Qualification Dollars waiver. As I was able to accomplish this in March, I’ve now earned Delta Platinum Medallion status for all of 2018, all of 2019, until Jan 2020, effectively giving an extra year than I had re-qualified last year.

With this though, I was a Silver Medallion for February and have a few thoughts on the status. The biggest gripe I have is the long hold times. It could have been due to the fact that we saw several winter storms last month, but I had wait times of nearly 2 hours trying to get through to reservations.

Additionally, unlike when calling as a Platinum and you’re connected to an agent, as a Silver Medallion when you call you have to enter a bunch of prompts when calling about if you’re looking to make a new reservation, existing, using miles etc.

When it comes to flying, I was able to plan my schedule that I didn’t have any travel in February, so I can’t comment on the travel experience as a Silver Medallion, with the exception of reservation sales.

  1. The ability to book good Exit Row seats on select aircraft (not all aircraft have “good” exit row seats) is a nice benefit for Silver Medallions. Call hold times or callback time from customer service can be long. The customer service wait times can be improved slightly by calling via the Delta iphone app after login. Upgrades from economy class to first/bus class are infrequent, although they are possible for Silver Medallion. On routes from SEA->LAX and LAX->PHX , I received such upgrades as a Silver. With that said, Silver Medallion doesn’t offer much, but is nice to have. It is not worth making extra effort via credit card spend or mileage runs to obtain Delta Silver though, if there are other options to accrue ffp/ hotel points or status.
