Puerto Rico Trip Report – St Regis Bahia Beach Continued

This post is a continuation of a review of the St Regis Bahia Beach.  This year we hopped on a Delta jet and headed to Puerto Rico for a long weekend. For our first stop we spent three nights at the St Regis using free night certificates from SPG’s 2011 promotion. I was a SPG Platinum member during this stay.

Beach

This beach appeared to be very private with little to no other development along this stretch of the beach. Bahia Beach in Rio Grande was all but deserted for our trip, and we liked it that way.

We had a very short walk from our suite to the beach. Along the way to the beach we passed the Plantation House and multiple lounging chairs. You can get to the beach from pretty much anywhere on the resort, so the picture below is from the most direct route to the beach from our suite. There was a more noticeable path from the Plantation that we did not take.

The grounds are very lush even though the property is relatively new. Likely because it was built on an old coconut plantation.

Restaurant

There are several dining options at the St Regis including their signature restaurant Fern, Molasses by the golf course, and the Seagrapes restaurant by the pool. We visited both Fern and Molasses during our stay and ventured off site for dinner another day (will be included in my next post).

The Jean-Georges Fern restaurant is located on the second floor of the Plantation House and overlooks the ocean. I contacted the concierge in advance and secured a table outside at dusk. This place reminded me of a time I visited a plantation restaurant in Dorado beach near the Hyatt. Fern was sophisticated casual with a pricey menu. We enjoyed our meal here and would go back.

The Molasses restaurant is located at the golf course. I requested a table outside to enjoy the nice view. However, after a few moments we realized we were being eaten alive by no-see-ums, so we moved inside to enjoy our meal. This restaurant also has a lively bar with bar food, which would be great for after a golf round or to catch a game.

St Regis Pool

The pool is located to the right (east) of the Plantation House. We had a short walk to the pool since our suite was to the left of the main building. The pool area is pretty relaxed and we enjoyed the quiet time catching up on reading. A reader (NYBanker) mentioned the pool can get cold in the winter time, but we didn’t have an issue during our visit in July.

We enjoyed the drink service a few times. You can eat at the Seagrapes pool restaurant or have an order delivered to your lounge chairs. The service at the pool and Seagrapes was prompt and friendly.

Spa

When Mrs Weekly Flyer wanted to go to the spa I checked to see if we could use the rest of our SpaFinder certificates (from the 40 Delta points per dollar fat-finger promotion last year). SpaFinder certificates cannot be used at this spa. I’d rather spend time on the golf course, but all I can say about the Remède Spa is wow!

You’ll see from the pictures they did a very nice job with this spa. The outdoor area is very relaxing and has multiple pools both hot and cold.

Bottom Line

The St Regis Bahia Beach has un-seated the Ritz Carlton as our new favorite hotel in Puerto Rico. The rates at the St Regis are high, so I would suggest you consider using Starpoints from Starwood Preferred guest for a stay here. The hotel is currently a category 6 which requires 20,000 or 25,000 Starpoints per night.

In the next post, I’ll share some of our time visiting El Yunque and the Fajardo area.

  1. Hi New Girl – Planning to get it up very soon. Pics are selected, edited and loaded, just need to put a bow on it.

Hi Alex – They brought a bottle of champagne. I also selected the 500 points.

  2. If you didn’t play the golf course there you really missed out. That is one of my favorite courses in the world and the finish of the last 4 holes is mind blowing.
