Sunday night flights are never fun. First of all, you’re likely leaving a fun weekend behind that is now over. Second of all, most of us will be headed back to work on Monday. But there is nothing like an upgrade surprise to make the flight more enjoyable.
I recently added the Delta Reserve American Express Credit Card to my wallet to improve my upgrade chances. So I wasn’t surprised to see my name at the top of the upgrade list with several hours to go before the flight. Good news all around. I was number one on the list with four open seats. An upgrade was at my fingertips.
I headed to the gate after a quick stop in the new Delta E Terminal SkyClub (trip report to follow) and then checked my spot on the upgrade list. I was surprised to see my name still at the top of the list but with no upgrades left to give out. So I shrugged and headed back to my economy comfort middle seat. Next time I thought.
The first class cabin had 5 empty seats as I passed through it. I saw a few cocktails, it was Sunday game day and the flight had live TV after all. The TV was free on the in-seat monitors, eat that up “Pay for TV Southwest” flyers.
Then the upgrade surprise caught me. The flight attendant stopped at 11 E and the following exchange ensued:
Flight Attendant – “Mr Weekly Flyer?”
Weekly Flyer – “Yes”
Flight Attendant – “We have a new boarding pass for you sir, please follow me”
Weekly Flyer – “It would be my pleasure”
It turned out that the five empty seats in First Class weren’t all spoken for and I received the last second in flight upgrade. What a fantastic way to end a weekend!

Hi Frugal Asian Man – They do, jk 🙂 would be funny though. Last week As te flight attendant was thanking all of the economy comfort elites and mentioning their elite levels, when she got to me she looked a little confused and said “thanks for flying” no name or elite level just a regular flyer:)
