Flying With An Infant – Booking Ticket For Expecting Baby

As AAdvantagegeek mentioned a few weeks ago, we are all about the Points, Miles, Martinis and now Milk Bottles. Baby Weekly Flyer has arrived and we couldn’t be more happy to welcome the new Weekly Flyer family member to our traveling crew. With the new arrival, we’ve had to go back and modify a few existing reservations that were booked before Baby Weekly Flyer arrived. So we thought we’d share the process to modify a reservation for a baby that hadn’t arrived when the reservation was made.

We researched and shared the general rules about traveling with an infant. At first glance we thought a ticket couldn’t be booked without an actual baby, this is not true. We booked two award tickets, and even modified one before Baby Weekly Flyer arrived.

Booking Ticket For Expecting Baby

Who would have thought you actually need a baby to book a flight? It turns out you don’t need a baby at all. All you need to do is give the name of the expecting baby and a “birth date”, even if it is an estimated one.

So with our first booking, we reserved two first class tickets to the Caribbean to take Baby Weekly Flyer on a second trip. The first trip was booked in coach on a much shorter route. Don’t worry first class flyers, we’ve modified the reservation to try out coach with Baby Weekly Flyer before we graduate to the big seats. After a bit of thought and some information from other bloggers including MommyPoints, DeltaPoints, Pizza In Motion, we decided to modify our trip to three coach tickets instead of two first class tickets. The baby will be safer and we’ll bank some miles for another trip at a later date.

Modifying Your Baby’s Reservation

Once the baby arrived it was easy to modify the birth date on the reservation.

Now that Baby Weekly Flyer has arrived, and in a big way, I’ve called up the airlines to make the modifications. I called up the Delta elite member line and asked the agent to pull up a few reservations. I simply informed the agent that Baby Weekly Flyer’s birth date was incorrect and I would like to update the birth date. The agent obliged and we are now all set to enjoy our first few trips with the new arrival.

Bottom Line

Booking award tickets sometimes requires a bit of planning, especially if you are booking more than one ticket. If you are expecting a baby in the near future and want to book an award for the baby, just give the agent a birth date that has already passed. Then when your baby arrives, just call the airline and update the reservation with the correct birth date.
