Last month I shared a few snapshots I took at the most remote airport on Earth. This month I find myself at the Northernmost airport on Earth in Longyearbyen, Svalbard, Norway. Longyearbyen is located at 78 degrees North, making it the Northernmost city in the world of any material size.
The airport is located a short 10 minutes from the town. Adjacent to the airport are two very interesting structures. One of which is a series of satellite dishes. Believe it or not, this extremely remote town was completely destroyed through bombing in WWII. The reason was actually its strategic position for predicting weather!
It is the global seed vault. The seed vault is an attempt to provide insurance against the loss of seeds in the case of large-scale global crises or other doomsday events (The elimination of all credit card sign up bonuses). The site is ideal due to its lack of tectonic activity and permafrost.
What an interesting place! I will detail my experience in the trip report.
