We fell in love with British Airways Avios points after our first short haul award redemption. Not only are the points good for short haul and long haul awards, the British Airways Avios program offers great value. From no foreign transaction fees, to combining family accounts to earning a Travel Together Ticket (that allows a companion to tag along on an award ticket at only the cost of the award fees and taxes), this card and program has a good value proposition.

In this post, we’ll share how to redeem for a 4,500 one-way coach award, earn a Travel Together Ticket, and combine family accounts.

The current British Airways credit card offer provides a way to stock up on British Airways Avios points, 50,000 to be exact. The offer provides 50,000 bonus Avios points after spending $2,000 in the first 3 months of card membership. There are no foreign transaction fees while traveling and the first year annual fee of $95 is waved to $0.

Booking Last Minute Award For 4,500 Points

I recently booked a short American Airlines one-way domestic flight for only 4,500 Avios points. You can see how many points your desired flight would require by looking at the British Airways Avios calculator.

For example, a flight from Miami to Providenciales, Turks & Caicos is only 4,500 points one-way plus taxes. That isn’t the only flight which requires 4,500 points, I can think of many more short haul flights that only require 4,500 points one-way. The easiest way to find your 4,500 point flight is to use the British Airways Avios calculator.

This flight can be redeemed on British Airways partner airline American Airlines.

Taking a look at the British Airways Avios calculator shows the points required is only 4,500 points one-way.

British Airways Avios points are relatively easy to accumulate as well. For example, the current British Airways Visa Signature® Card offer provides 50,000 bonus Avios points after you make $2,000 in purchases within the first 3 months of account opening. That’s a lot of one-way flights.

Double Value Of Your Avios Points – Travel Together Ticket

Each calendar year that a card member makes $30,000 in purchases on the British Airways Visa Signature® Card, the card member will receive a Travel Together Ticket. The Travel Together Ticket allows the card member to redeem one reward seat and bring along a traveling companion on a flight, even in First Class.

It gets even better. Since the Travel Together Ticket is good for 2 years after date of issue, the card member could essentially earn an additional Travel Together Ticket in the following year and redeem one reward flight and use two Travel Together Tickets to bring along 2 additional companions. The travel must originate and return to the US and the companion must travel on the same flights as the card member.

How To Establish Family Account

We have had a British Airways household for several years and but having a household account prevents you from booking an award for someone outside of the household. If you don’t have one, you can follow the simple steps below.

A head of household must be established to start the process. The head of the household account will be the central point in the family account. All email communications about the account will be directed to this person. They are the only ones who can add or remove members from the household account.

Step 1)

Navigate to the “Manage my account” section in your British Airways Executive Club account.

Step 2)

Select the option to “Apply/change my Household Account” in your British Airways Executive Club account that you wish to have the head of household designated.

Step 5)

A review screen will display the nominee which you wish to add to the household account. After reviewing the information, select the “create Household Account” option.

Step 6)

The final step will send an email to your nominee asking them to confirm their acceptance of the household account. Once the nominee is confirmed you will see a cumulative Avios points balance each time any member logs into their account.

Bottom Line

Let’s recap. British Airways is offering a 50,000 bonus after spending $2,000 on the British Airways Visa Signature® Card within the first 3 months of being a card member. British Airways Avios points can be combined with family members, so if a spouse and you each get a card, you can combine balances to have a total of 100,000 British Airways Avios points. Furthermore, if a card member spends $30,000 in a calendar year, they’ll receive a Travel Together Ticket which allows for a person on a reward ticket to bring along a traveling companion at only the cost of the award fees.
