Earlier this month, I stayed at the brand new Andaz Maui at Wailea and overall I was very impressed with this property. This hotel opened up in September 2013 and is the first new property to open on the Wailea side of Maui in over 20 years.

This property is a Category 6 hotel requiring 25,000 Hyatt Gold Passport points per night or 12,500 points plus $150 for cash and points.

However when I stayed cash and points were not in place yet so I ended up paying $389 per night and then using a Diamond Suite Upgrade to confirm a Partial Ocean View suite upon booking.

The hotel is about a 25 minute drive from the airport but was very easy to find. The hotel has an open entry way into the lobby

At Andaz properties, you’re greeted by a host who will check you in while you sit down in the lobby. They don’t have a traditional front desk where you check in, so instead you’re able to relax and have a drink while the host gets you checked in.

When I made the reservation, I did request a high floor room so was less than pleased to be placed on the first floor of this specific building. My first room was located on the “third floor” which is really the ground floor for this wing.

My partial ocean view suite featured a nice living room with a half bathroom in the living room but had a view of the new villa building. I was dissatisfied with the view, however since the hotel was full the first two nights they said they would be unable to move me until the third day.

The bedroom featured a comfortable king sized bed which was low to the ground.

The master bathroom was very spacious and had an open shower concept as well as a separate soaking tub.

The bathroom was very modern and had dual vanities.

At all Andaz properties, the mini-bar is stocked, however all non-alcoholic beverages and snacks are complimentary.

As a Diamond member, I decided to choose the fruit and wine welcome amenity for this stay.

There was another amenity waiting for me in the room of freshly made chocolate chip cookies and milk.

On the third day, I was able to move to another suite that had a real ocean view. If you’re using a Diamond Suite Upgrade, I would recommend asking for a suite ending in 39 or 40 as these are in their building closest to the ocean. Our new room was 539 and offered great views.

One day for lunch, we decided to eat pool side and I had the hotel’s signature Lobster Grilled Cheese sandwich which was really good and I highly recommend. Even before I stayed here several others told me to order this at the hotel and it did not disappoint.

The hotel features a small marketplace cafe that has pastries, coffee and other to-go food items.

There is an adults only pool in front of the gym for lap swimming which was empty most of the time.

One of the best benefits for Diamond members here is the complimentary breakfast at the hotel’s main restaurant Ka’ana Kitchen, which normally is $45 per person. The buffet is an open kitchen style where you’re able to go through the kitchen. All the staff I met at the restaurant were great and encouraged us to order different item’s from the chef, which we did.

The hotel does have nice spa areas with steam rooms, saunas and a whirlpool. These facilities are complimentary for all guests, though they were never busy so I don’t think many guests knew about them.

If you’re looking for a massage to relax, the spa has many treatment rooms including several couple’s massage rooms.

Bottom Line

If you’re headed to Maui, I would highly recommend the Andaz Maui at Wailea. We decided to rent a car last minute and it was great since we were able to stop at the market on the way to the hotel as well as spend some days driving to the other parts of the island.

The hotel does charge a hefty $30 for valet parking and there is no self-parking option. One plus is that there is no resort fee at the property.

If you’re looking to get the most value out of your stay, I would look at the Cash and Points rate for 12,500 points and $150 a night. Cash and Points earn stay and night credit toward elite status and offers the ability to apply Diamond Suite Upgrades to the rate.

The breakfast at the hotel was one of the best I’ve ever had at any Hyatt property. The grounds and pools are great and there was never an issue finding a chair by the pool even when the hotel was sold out.

The hotel does have a private beach area in front of it where they will set up chairs and umbrellas for hotel guests for no charge.
