How Does Fuel Points Work?

Fuel points works by awarding points for spending at Kroger. Then the customer can redeem points for a $ amount off each gallon of gas.

Earning rates are as follows:

  1. Spending on Groceries (normal exclusions apply): $1 in Groceries = 1 fuel point.
  2. Normally double fuel points for Gift Card purchases (normal exclusions apply). For example, $25 in Gift Cards = 50 fuel points.
  3. Non-federally funded Prescriptions: 1 Prescription = 50 fuel points. a. As of August 1, 2012, federally funded Prescriptions earn 1 point for every $1 of your out-of-pocket costs for new, transferred and refilled Prescriptions.

Why Should I Care?

The best part, is Kroger counts select gift cards purchased in the grocery store as spend towards the fuel points. In fact, they give you more fuel points for purchasing gift cards.

So you can earn up to a $1 back on each gallon of gas, by making purchases in store on gift cards for stores you’d spend money at anyway. Not to mention if you have a credit card that gives cash back on grocery store purchases, you can save even more.

4x Fuel Points Promotion

Kroger often runs promotions to reward more fuel points on gift cards. Right now, there is a broad promotion for 4x Fuel Points on gift card purchases through December 6th. So, get started on some holiday shopping and save a bunch of money on fuel!

How To Get $1 Off Gallon Of Gas?

Signup for a Kroger account. Then earn points by shopping at Kroger.

Once you have 1,000 points in your account, you qualify for $1 off every gallon of gas for a fill-up, up to 35 gallons. But even if you don’t have 1,000 points, you can earn discounts with the following points:

  • 100 fuel points = 10¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up at participating Shell Stations.
  • 100 fuel points = 10¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up at Kroger.
  • 200 fuel points = 20¢ off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up at Kroger.
  • 1,000 fuel points = $1 off per gallon of fuel for 1 fill-up at Kroger.

Bottom Line

I don’t like to pay full price for anything including fuel! You can save big bucks on gas by using Kroger’s Fuel Points program by buying gift cards at stores or restaurants that you plan to spend money at anyway.

Today I used this promotion and redeemed a 1,000 Kroger Fuel Points to save a $1 off every gallon and got some Target gift cards for shopping that I will do at Target anyway!

  1. I believe that variable load Visa gift cards and gift cards to Kroger itself do NOT count towards fuel points, right? I do think that the regular $100 and $200 Visa / MC cards do give Fuel Rewards

  2. Correct from my personal experience. Variable load and/or reloadable cards do NOT count towards fuel points. However, specific load (not sure of the correct term) i.e. $25 Starbucks, $50 Amazon,….Visa/MC/AmEx $25, $50, $100, $200 DO count towards fuel points. 2x all the time, and 4x during promotions. Im lucky in that we just had a brand new Kroger’s (omg is it gorgeous) open about a mile from me the end of Oct and have become quite the fuel point hoard since Grand Opening Day 🙂 Never stepped foot inside a Kroger’s before Oct, now you can’t get me out of there lol.

  3. I have never seen a $200 Visa/MC GC at Kroger. Which stores have you seen this. Only $100 which counts towards the fuel points but such a pain to load so many $100 cards.

  4. out of curiosity how did you all know that the variable amount gift cards didn’t apply for the 4xs fuel points? i can’t find it anywherenon their website

  5. I know you don’t fuel points when you buy a Kroger gift card. Do you get fuel points when you use the Kroger gift card?

  6. @Donnad, Yes, you do get fuel points when you USE a Kroger gift card, from my experience. It’s just regular 1x points though.

  7. how do i get my coupon? Read about it in today’s paper; 12/3/16 and it said we need a couon printed from your website—–but how?
