Bottom Line
This promotion looks very similar to American’s recent offer for their elite fliers to earn bonus miles in first class, however unlike American’s which is good the whole year, United’s is only good until the end of February.

It is only valid until 28 February because that’s when United switches to a revenue-based earning program, at which point the earn rates on premium fares are likely to exceed those on AA metal even with AA’s big bonus. This is simply a stop-gap to remain competitive for the next 7 weeks given AA’s efforts to stay competitive with UA and DL’s revenue-based earning which will be a windfall for most premium passengers.
