You will need 12,000-16,000 Starpoints for a free night for a Category 5 hotel. As a reminder, you can redeem 4 nights and get the 5th night free.
Another option for Category 5 hotel is Cash and Points, which will cost 5,000 Starpoints + $75 per night.

I have to say, having stayed at the Le Méridien Koh Samui Resort & Spa in September of 2015, I would not recommend this property at all.
We did get a private plunge pool room, which was the best part of the hotel. The rooms are interesting, as the ‘living area’ is separated from the ‘bedroom’ and makes hanging out in the room feel very claustrophobic. The bathroom is completely open to the elements, some will like that (me) others will not (wife).
The one and only place for food is outdoor seating only as well, the pool is not great, and the beach is a big let down. I found the staff to be impartial, and having stayed at the Intercontinental and Conrad on the island, I wished I had booked the W. There are better uses of SPG points on the island itself, which was wonderful – I will be staying at the Conrad again next time, having your own private villa and pool on the cliff side was amazing – it was the best hotel stay of my life, no joke!
