How I Earned $150 Back from Smart and Final

One of the current Amex Sync offers going on right now is that you can earn $25 back on a $50 purchase or more at Smart and Final. The great thing is you can register for this via Twitter, so all Amex cardholders should be eligible, and each card you register is good for 3 different times for this offer.

I quickly registered for this offer on Twitter, and then was off to Smart and Final. The great thing is that Smart and Final sells many different merchant gift cards including Amex and Visa and these do count toward this offer.

Here’s what I decided to buy:

  • 4 $50 American Express Gift Cards ($54.95* 4 = $219.80)
  • 2 $25 Amazon Gift Cards ($25*2 = $50)
  • 1 $50 Nordstrom Giftcard ($50)

My total in spending was $319.80 in giftcards, however I received 6 $25 statement credits, bringing my net cost down to $169.80, giving me an overall savings of $150, since I used two cards and maxed them out.

After each swipe, I received an email from American Express confirming that I would be receiving the statement credit.

One word of caution is that you must purchase each giftcard separately, so if you’re looking to max out, you have to buy $50, then pay for it, then have the cashier ring up the next giftcard and pay for it and so on.

Bottom Line

If you live near a Smart and Final, this is a great offer that I would recommend taking advantage of.

  1. We were able to find several products that we use often and that were great value, so we added a few Amazon cards to those things. We felt that, if we could, we should support the merchant by buying drinks and food, etc., and not just gift cards. But, DH and I were both able to max out our offers. A great promotion.

  2. With Redbird and AFT dead, how are you planning on liquidating the AGCs?

  3. Nice haul! I was happy to find that I was targeted for the Smart & Final Amex Offer. I was able to use on one of my cards so that was an easy $75 since I used it 3x. One thing to note, if you purchase a Smart & Final gift card, you’ll want to activate a separate gift card for each transaction. In my experience, when I tried to load $50 on a S&F gift card for the second transaction, it failed to load but it charged my Amex card! I had to wait until the pending transaction process and went back to S&F and showed the manager and they gave me a new gift card with $50. I don’t think their gift cards were meant for loading multiple times, just once.
