American Airlines is the latest U.S. airline to increase their checked baggage fees, effective Sept. 21, 2018. If you want to check a bag on your next flight, it will now cost you $30 for the first bag, and $40 for the second checked bag.

It’s clear that American is following its competitors United and Delta, as we shared earlier this month how United Airlines Is Now Charging $30 for First Bag, and Delta Increases Domestic Baggage Fees; First Bag Now $30, both taking a play from JetBlue Airways who raised fees last month.

Per CNBC,

American Airlines, the world’s largest airline, will charge customers $5 more for the first and second checked bags for travel in the U.S., Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and the Caribbean, the company said Thursday.

The new prices will be up to $30 from $25 for the first checked bag and $40 up from $35 for the second, effective for tickets purchased beginning Sept. 21. Certain AAdvantage members will continue to be eligible for free checked bags.

Several credit cards including The Platinum Card® from American Express and the Premier Rewards Gold Card from American Express offer annual airline fee credits, which will reimburse you for expenses including checked baggage fees.
