Delta Rolls Out New Mileage Upgrade for SkyMiles Members

Delta has rolled out a new feature on their website, where SkyMiles can now upgrade their tickets using SkyMiles online. It’s not just for First Class or Business Class either – Main Cabin passengers can upgrade to Comfort Plus or First Class.

Business travelers may find this useful, if for instance their company only allows the purchase of tickets in coach, and they wish to upgrade using their own miles to First Class, this makes that now possible.

Additionally, it does appear that these upgraded tickets book into paid First or Business class fares, meaning SkyMiles members would be eligible for the bonus MQMs that come with booking paid First and Business class.

Per Delta, here’s how it works after a ticket has been purchased:

A customer can log in to Delta.com to buy Delta Comfort+, First Class, Delta Premium Select, or Delta One as an add-on, or ancillary purchase, as available — regardless of where or how the original ticket was purchased. The customer can select a premium seat on any individual segment of their journey, or the entire trip, and use miles or a different method of payment for the transaction. Only flight segments operated by Delta are eligible for purchasing upgrades after booking a ticket, subject to availability.

  1. THIS WILL PROBABLY ELEMINATE THE ABILITY TO GET THE FREE UPGRADES WHICH IS EXactly what Delta wanted to accomplish.

  2. I agree with John, It’s tough to get upgrade as it is, as a Delta elite member. It’s an easiet way for Delta to offload miles off the books.

    Bad news for Delta Elites.

  3. It’s a terrible use of miles for those who choose to do it. Elite status’s is pretty much the passed anyway. I fly United now, got sick of Delta’s smug bull crap. I never see first class as a 1K even on full fares but I do have access to huge Eocnomy plus cabins and always get an aisle seat even if last minute. I am also granted a free drink and hot food, that’s something Delta can’t match.

Why do Delta elites put up with their terrible Comfort plus upgrade process. What a nightmare, especially when with a companion.
