I was pleasantly surprised checking my mail today. I had the following envelope from Amex thanking me for my membership. I have several American Express cards. Inside was a $200 gift card to clothing store Billy Reid. While it isn’t my typical shopping spot, I will gladly pick out a free shirt on Amex! How awesome! Did you receive this one? Was it the same or something different?

I carry the Platinum Card from American Express amongst others.

Check your mail for this blue envelope if you are an Amex cardholder.

Bottom Line

This is a nice perk! Thanks Amex!

  1. I received the $200 cardboard gift card as well. I used it to buy 2 pairs of sunglasses for $97 each $0 out of pocket. I received the sunglasses today and I’m not surprised that Amex is giving away “$200” towards a selection of Billy Reid items. Those sunglasses are literally junk, the type of sunglasses you buy for $20 at online optics stores. I’m guessing the clothing isn’t much different. I guess free is free right? But the value of the merchandise is greatly overstated…

  2. Absolute joke. Apparently their offer is now only available in-store and cannot be redeemed online. Well, I’m an hour from their nearest store. I e-mailed them and hope they can make it right. Otherwise, they get the reward for fastest to win and lose a new customer.

  3. I read online someplace that they screwed up this offer. Each coupon code was labeled “AMEXBillyReid12345” and was 100% free money on the site. If you ordered less than $200, you didn’t even have to pay for shipping or tax, they just mailed it to you. On top of this, the coupon codes were not generated in any intelligent way so if you just used “AMEXBillyReid1234*6*” (changed 1 number), the new code would also work. Because of this ‘hack’ or ‘hole in their plan’, they made the change to require you to go to a store where they could validate you actually had an amex card and presumably limit you to 1 purchase.
