Marriott Employees Will Now Earn Bonvoy Elite Status

Marriott has announced that starting November 25, 2019, employees rates well as those under the friends/family discount will be eligible to earn night credits toward elite status, as well as receive elite benefits on their stays assuming they have status.

Previously, those who booked an employee rate or friends/family rate would have to forgo their elite status benefits and not earn any stay credits. For comparison, Hilton allows its employee rates to qualify for elite status, so nice to see this change take place.

Starting November 25, 2019, associates will be able to participate in Marriott Bonvoy as earning members on all stays, including on eligible Explore Program and business travel rates.

Here’s a run down on why Marriott is making this change:

•Marriott Bonvoy, the travel loyalty program at Marriott International, is built upon the belief that travel enriches us all and has the power to connect the world.

•There is no better way to help associates believe in the power of Marriott Bonvoy than to have them experience it firsthand.

Bottom Line

With nearly 200,000 current Marriott employees and growing, as well as thousands more who can book friends/family rates, I’d expect to see an increase in elite members.

If you’re a Marriott employee you’ll now be well on your way to earning elite status, however even if you aren’t, the hotel company offers a lucrative friends/family rate so see if you know anyone who works at Marriott who will share their discount with you.

Feel free to share your thoughts below if you’re in favor of Marriott employee rates now eligible for elite benefits/stay credits or if you think we’ll see added elites as a result.

  1. Friends and Family rate is probably the big deal here. As a former Marriott employee, very few employees below a mid-level management/executive will travel enough to earn status. But letting F&F get the benefits and earn on the discounted rate – that’s a sizable number of bookings and a
    real attraction IMHO.

  2. Few points need to be clear , If Marriot an employee use the explore rate / employee rate and stay in a property he will get the Elite night credit and elite status like upgradation etc but what about a friend who stay using Friends and family rate? Who will get the Elite night credit ? The employee or the friend who stayed?

How many time can we use the friends and family rate form? Is it property specific or time specific ? Is it possible for me to use Explore rate based on my friend who work there and get the night credit and Elite benefit ?

  3. From my understanding Marriott Employees have 10 days PTO per year…not coming close to earn any status. No flex/comp time either for salaried employees when you work extra hours and want to take off Friday afternoon from the folks I’ve chatted with at front desk.

  4. Hello, can you share the original press release/announcement from Marriott or a link? Thanks so much!
