Why I’m Excited to be a Silver Medallion on Delta

When it comes to Medallion Status, you must earn it each year on Delta as all your Medallion Qualification Miles (MQMs) reset at the end year. That means on January 1, 2018 everyone goes back to zero, however with Delta, they offer rollover miles, which is the ability to carry-over any MQMs in excess of your earned status.

This will be the first time I haven’t re-qualified for Platinum Medallion, however I couldn’t be excited to be a Silver Medallion. I ended 2017 with around 83K MQMs, which is enough for Platinum, however based on the Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs), I only spent enough for Silver and didn’t earn the MQD waiver through spending.

So with that, I’m starting 2018 as a Silver Medallion and with 58,000 MQMs. During the first few weeks I should earn 7,000 MQMs which will put be at around 65,000 MQMs. Then, I plan to spend $25,000 on my Platinum Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express, which will put give me an additional 10,000 MQMs putting me at 75,000 MQMs as well as give me the Medallion Qualification Dollars waiver.

I hope to accomplishment this by March, and then I will earn Delta Platinum Medallion status for all of 2018, all of 2019, until Jan 2020, effectively giving an extra year than I had re-qualified last year.

For you’re looking to earn MQMs a fast and easy way, then you’ll want to check out Delta’s co-branded credit cards as an option.

  1. Maybe this is what I will do this year so that I can roll over more MQM’s for next year to get platinum early in the year. Put my 60K spend on another card that will earn more points.

  2. Definitely a great strategy if you are willingly to drop status for the first few months and then gain it back for 2 years. Thanks for the heads up on this strategy!
