On October 9th a wild fire spread to the Grand Mauritian and caused terrible damage to the hotel. I was fortunate to experience this great hotel during a visit to Mauritius and Seychelles in 2009. The hotel has responded by providing guests alternative reservations at the Lle Maurice Le Meridien hotel on Mauritius. See below for video of the damage and the hotels response.

Response From Hotel
On October 9th at 12 noon local time, a wild fire originating from the surrounding area spread to the The Grand Mauritian Resort & Spa in Turtle Bay, Mauritius. The hotel was promptly evacuated and the local fire brigade got on site to control and extinguish the blaze. Thankfully, none of our hotel guests, associates or other persons were injured. In that regard, the Hotel has no other choice but to discontinue all operations and close during the requisite period of reconstruction.
However, as an alternative we are pleased to offer you our sister hotel Le Méridien Ile Maurice (www.lemeridien-mauritius.com), elected Leading Hotel in Mauritius for the last 2 years by World Travel Awards, located on the north west coast of the Island for the current period or the St Regis Resort, Mauritius situated at Le Morne peninsula, on the South West coast, which will be available for stay starting as from 15th of March 2012.
On behalf of the team members of the Grand Mauritian Resort & Spa, member of the Luxury Collection Resorts, we would like to express our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused and hope that we will again welcome you at one of the above mentioned fantastic Starwood properties available on the Island.
What To Do If You Have A Reservation
For any further information on these properties, please visit www.spg.com or contact our reservation office at +230 204 3415 or at reservations.thegrandmauritian@starwoodhotels.com
I would contact the hotel directly. Alternatively you can contact customercare@starwoodhotels.com, they were extremely helpful to me when I had an award reservation at the El Tamarindo Resort when it backed out of the SPG program. The Le Meridien gets good reviews and the St Regis Mauritius Resort is opening on May 15th, 2012.
Bottom Line
This was a great hotel and I feel for the 250 employees (and guests) who’s lives have been changed by this unfortunate event. I wish them the best in the rebuilding process.
