While I will only be a Delta diamond for a few more days, I decided to take one last flight as a Delta Diamond, you know, for old time sake. Even though I didn’t get upgraded, I still got to have one of my favorite drinks in the air, Woodford Reserve. The best part about the drink was I got it for free courtesy of Delta. I received a free drink coupon as part of Delta’s Sky Priority program called Have One On Us.
If you don’t know what the Have One On Us program is, you should. Make sure you know the trick of how to get the Have One On Us coupon for the next time you are not sitting up front.
Have One On Us Program
Delta launched Sky Priority, a service for Gold elite members or above. One of the best parts about Sky Priority is the free drinks you get when you check in online at Delta.com. If you check in online and are at least a Gold elite member, there is a high likelihood you will receive a Have One On Us coupon.
The coupon is good for:
- One Cocktail;
- One Beer;
- One Wine;
- or a non-perishable snack
But the trick is, you won’t get the coupon if you check in via your iPhone or mobile device, so remember to check in online where you actually get a boarding pass.
From Skymilesinsider:
When you check-in on delta.com and we recognize that you didn’t get upgraded, we will add a coupon to your self-printed boarding pass for a complimentary beverage or in-flight snack.
The picture above is before you print your boarding pass. The picture on your boarding pass is very similar, except it has an expiration date, bar code, and a certificate number. You hand in this part of the boarding pass when you order your drink on the plane and voila, you have a free drink.
Bottom Line
Nothing beats a happy hour in the sky, unless it’s a free happy hour. If you like having one on Delta, and are at least a Gold Medallion member, make sure you check in online and print your boarding pass before heading to the airport.
Are there any other times you can get a free drink on Delta?

I’m a lowly silver medallion – …. No free drinks for me!
Love the Have one on us coupons! I usually get one of the snack boxes with mine. It’s a great value – lots of snacks for the trip – and more useful to me than a drink.
@ WillRunForMiles im a FO on delta too!
Need to stop checking in with my iPhone….
Commander – Those were my exact thoughts.
I have a few of these with an expiry date of Dec 2011… does anyone know if they’ll still honor expired coupons?
@JCS, I used an expired coupon last month, which I placed around my Gold Medallion card. The FA took it, saw the expiration date, saw my GM card, and still honored it.
I hate to be a DYKWIA, but I try to flash my GM card without saying anything if I’m trying to skirt some rules, like when I boarded a 763 last and there were no more overhead bins. FA wanted to gate check until she saw my GM card, then switched to saying, “Oh, maybe we can put your rollerboard in our crew closet.”
I just checked in and for the first time in YEARS I did NOT get a Have One on Us coupon. I was Platinum through February and then dropped to Gold but this is the first flight since that time for which I’ve been able to check in online. I don’t know if my travel so far this year is too low to merit Have One on Us or if they’ve changed and they’re not doing it for Gold Medallions any longer.
Follow up comment: on a popular message board (I won’t mention it by name here because I don’t know what your policies on that are), I found that a lot of people who are in V and X fare classes are not getting the Have One on Us coupons on their boarding passes. Apparently Delta has changed what some fare classes represent (it seems this is as a result of Delta and KLM/Air France doing a fare class alignment over the last few months) but the programming logic for determining when to grant a Have One on Us coupon has not changed and as a result, some non-upgraded flights (like mine for tomorrow) are not getting the coupons while at the same time some upgraded flights are getting the coupons. Come on, Delta, fix this!
