I have been extremely fortunate to visit hundreds of different places across the globe over the last few years but no place had me hooked in a way quite like Marfa, Texas. I have never been able to properly articulate why I enjoy Marfa so much but I just do.
I was mindlessly perusing television this Sunday evening and was quite surprised to encounter an entire 60 Minutes segment devoted to this TINY West Texas town, located three hours from the nearest commercial airports of El Paso or Midland/Odessa. Much like discovering an amazing points and miles trick, my first thought was….SHHHH, STOP telling everyone about it! I like Marfa just the way it is.
Hotel options in Marfa are extremely awesome. You really can’t go wrong. You can stay at El Cosmico in refurbished RV’s, tents or a giant Teepee….
….the super modern Thunderbird Motel….
…or Hotel Paisano where Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson stayed when they filmed Giant.
The 60 Minutes segment does a pretty good job capturing the spirit of Marfa. If you’d like to watch the 60 Minutes segment, you can view it here….but do me a favor and PLEASE don’t tell anyone else about it.
Hah! I just watched this as lunch today (TiVo picked it up due to coverage we have because 60 minutes always gets delayed and runs into Amazing Race). Great little town.
Wow the random Prada store with nothing around it is kinda amusing
Amazing town, without a doubt. I’ve been many times and I always come away having made new friends. The food there is AMAZING by the way. Two GREAT food trucks, Food Shark which has gotten all of the attention the last few years, and Fat Lyles which is less healthy because a lot of things are fried but DELICIOUS!! Cochineal restaurant is amazing, I can’t believe a place that good and sophisticated is in West Texas. There are a few others I just can’t think of right now. Trust me, great food town. Oh yeah, Pizza Foundation! Only open on the weekends, but great NY style pizza. Again, how is something so good out in the middle of nowhere?
Has a lot of cache with traits and other tastemakers because of Donald Judd et al.
Hah, I saw this piece and added it to my list! Now it’s just deciding on the RV’s, tents or a teepees…
