Summer reminds me of car trips, boats and beaches. Each summer growing up we’d always look forward to the summer trip. Whether it was a trip to the beach or a flight up to the Cape, it was not only was it a vacation, it was a chance to make lasting memories with family members.

My two favorite summer travel memories included renting a car and driving around the Northeast from Manhattan to Cape Code to Martha’s Vineyard and taking an Amtrak sleeper car to explore the Nation’s Capital.

Boston, Cape Cod & Martha’s Vineyard

We flew up to Boston and picked up our rental car to explore Boston before heading over to the Cape to meet up with family. We took a day trip on the ferry over to Martha’s Vineyard and rode bikes all over the island. We even saw where that famous scene from Jaws was filmed. How cool is that for a kid? We dug for clams and I lost my sandals in knee deep mud. My brother and I learned how to sail, cook clams, and had a great summer with the family.

Amtrak To DC

The trip up to DC was memorable because it was my first train ride in a sleeper car. We had a bunk room and I remember watching “train tv†thinking it was the coolest thing.

Comments

  1. Spending nights in upstate NY. The temperature, the fireflies, the peace at night, and the crisp air are the essence of summer.

  2. My wife and I were driving to Charleston, SC a few years ago when my truck stopped in the middle of nowhere northern South Carolina. We spent a night in the Patrick Henry Motor Lodge (Give me good rates or give me death!). We didn’t let that kill us though. I used points for a rental car and finished the trip picking up my truck on the way back home.

  3. My favorite summer memory is going to Miami Beach with my family every summer.

  4. Last year we went to Wild Oaks Ranch in San Antonio with the kids. First time renting a condo instead of hotel. Loved it!!!

  5. As a kid, visiting family in IN., where we would set off fireworks on 7-4 on the dock at the lake at the back of the family farm.

  6. heading down the grand canyon on the back of a mule and staying overnight at the bright angel lodge growing up is still one of my favorite summer memories

  7. My favorite family summer trip was a ‘Harry Potter’ inspired trip with my grandson who is interested in learning to golf. I booked a Viewliner Bedroom cabin on the Amtrak Silver Star 91 from Cary, NC to Winter Park, FL., packed a ‘Harry Potter’ inspired goodie bag, and off we went. My grandson was thrilled to be on the train, enjoyed the goodie bag filled with treats, games, and surprises, and a late night trek to the snack car. The evening dinner in the dining car was a fabulous steak dinner and breakfast the next morning was fresh strawberries atop a yummy stack of pancakes. We stayed with my sister whose home is on the 18th green of Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club in Orlando. My grandson got to learn the game of golf at the famous Bay Hill Country Club, drive the golf cart around the court, and enjoy the overnight train trip back home!

  8. Traveling by train to see grandparents in New Jersey, big change from Savannah, Ga.

  9. Going on a road trip with my best friend. America is a beautiful place with lots of amazing parks to see.

  10. My favorite summer memory was taking road trips from SC to NY every year growing up with my grandmother and uncle.

  11. I’m going on a return trip to Cape Cod and am looking forward to the local foods – fried clams, lobster rolls, sweet Portuguese bread and beach plum jam.

  12. I’m flying to NYC on points in a month, and staying at the Waldorf on points!

  13. Upcoming memorable trip: flying to Switzerland this summer for a friend’s wedding. About half of the people flying over are doing it on miles & points!

  14. My favorite memory is taking my parents on their first airplane ride. They were nervous going through the check-in process, but after that they became frequent flyers traveling all over the world.

  15. I’m looking forward to our upcoming anniversary trip to Hong Kong! First time in Cathay First 🙂 and staying at the Intercontinental!

  16. A family trip to three islands of Hawaii – one week each on Maui, Kauai and the Big Island. Loved Kauai the best!

  17. I remember a trip to South Padre Island as a kid. I got to play with fireworks and go to the beach…. Best trip ever.

  18. I’m taking my family to Europe for the first time. We leave next week! I think we might make some of our best ever memories there!

  19. Summers up at Mirror Lake, my cousin’s cottage up in the Canadian Shield in North Western Quebec. Canoeing to the Beaver Dam at the end of the lake, where we’d knock off a few sticks and by the time we came back from the end of the lake it would be repaired. Swimming laps of the lake to see how many miles we could swim in a week. Diving to the bottom (when my inner ear was a lot more flexible) to bring back mud to prove I made it. My cousin’s tippy canoe. Watching movies at the drive in (remember those?). Eating a “teen burger” at the A&W, where they hung the tray on your car’s window, with a big frosty root bear mug for each of us. Driving back home in the back of their van with the collected garbage from the weekend smelling up the place, sliding back and forth until we inevitably threw up. Good times!

  20. Another favorite summer trip was the 4 months I spent in Indonesia and East Timor. Spend a month getting my PADI Dive Master certification and then went off island hoping and climbing volcanoes. Even learned some Indonesian as it has got to be the most basic language to learn.

  21. My favorite travel memory is flying to Florida to visit my parents. I always was looking forward to the flight.

  22. Trudging along up steep trails in Yosemite overnight, just to see that glorious sunrise atop Cloud’s Rest in the morning.

  23. An upcoming memorable trip is to Bali, Indonesia. Nothing but pure relaxation and stunning views.

  24. My favorite vacations were taking my two boys on annual skiing trips to Colorado and Utah. On the first trips 30 years ago they followed me down the slopes like ducklings after their mother. Now I follow them!

  25. As simple as it may be, my favorite travel memory is watching my son chasing pigeons around the pond in Tuileries Garden in Paris.

  26. My childhood memories of summers was an “exile” of me, a city girl, to the grandma’s village where the life was slower and more simple. But as a result of this, I love riding and sleeping overnight on trains. Unfortunately, Amtrak is not as frequent, convenient or cheap as some of its European counterparts. But it is still a nice way to travel and can have its merits at times, especially I the congested Northeast corridor.

  27. Favorite travel memory is exploring the L.L. Bean flagship store in Freeport, Maine, with the kids and taking pictures with the signature boot at the entrance.

  28. A five day boat trip from Port Ludlow, WA up into the Canadian Gulf Islands.

  29. Since my wife and I are teachers, we can book refundable hotels in advance and then try for some last minute deals. Priceline, Backbid, and Best Rate Guarantees can be huge money savers

  30. Last year we went to the Oregon coast and it doesn’t sound like much, but it was the most relaxing, peaceful family vacation we’ve ever been on. We were able to enjoy the beach and the scenery everyday without huge crowds.
