One of perks for re-qualifying for Starwood Platinum or Starwood Gold status, is that members are able to select a renewal gift.
The choices for the Starwood Platinum Renewal gift this year are either Double Starpoints or 35% Off a Redemption. You may select your choice on their site now through the end of January, so make sure to register for one.
You will qualify for this gift if you meet one of the following options:
- If you were SPG Gold or lower in 2012,
- by completing 10 stays or 25 nights in 2013, or
- by spending $30,000 in 2013 on an SPG Amex card linked to the SPG account
- If you were SPG Platinum in 2012, by completing 25 stays or 50 nights in 2013
If you choose Double Starpoints, you’ll be able to select March, April or May as your bonus month. You’ll then earn double Starpoints for every eligible stay for an entire month.
If you decide on the 35% Off a Redemption, you’ll be able to redeem your Starpoints for up to five nights (meaning this is combinable with the fifth night free redemption option) at any Category 1–6 hotel or resort within the next six months.
Bottom Line
Depending on if you have any upcoming hotel redemptions or not could impact your decision on what gift to choose. However, I’d strongly encourage you to look at the 35% off the hotel redemption because this could save you a tremendous amount of points.
For instance, if you were to redeem for 5 nights at a Category 6 hotel that would normally cost you 80,000 points (in low season) since you would get the 5th night free. With the 35% off then, it would bring it down to 52,000 points for the 5 nights, or 10,400 SPG points per night. You’re basically able to redeem for 50% off a 5 night redemption at a Category 6 property which is great!
Some of my favorite Category 6 properties are The St. Regis Punta Mita Resort, The St. Regis Monarch Beach, SLS Hotel, Beverly Hills, W New York – Union Square, W Retreat & Spa – Vieques Island, The Westin Paris – Vendôme, and The St. Regis Rome.
There are also gifts for those who re-qualifying for SPG Gold Status as well. You can register here, and the choices are either double Starpoints for a month or 25% off a hotel redemption.

I’m SPG Gold but it says I am not eligible… lame 🙁
Link says I’m not eligible either.. Plat 2012 requaliflied for Plat 2013..
@ Angelina and E, If you believe you should be eligible but are not, I would recommend contacting Starwood.
Also “ineligible.”
Curious – my SPG Gold is AMEX Plat-based.
Not SPG “earnings-based.”
@Colleen, you would need to “earn” SPG Gold by staying 25 nights or 10 stays to be eligible.
@Points, Miles & Martinis
Meeting the spending requirement on the SPG requirement to achieve gold will also work.
Using it right now with combination with a 5th night free stay at Westin Maui.
Ineligible for me as well and I’ve been gold for the past 4 years (Spend based). Chatted CS and they said this was a “welcome gift” link. Not a renewal elite link. Might be why a lot of us are getting ineligible.
My wife was SPG Gold by way of the Amex Plat card and she was eligible – this year and last year.
Wife got an email in late December from ” Starwood” . This prompted me to search my in box for an overlooked email.Found it.
Thanks, Signed up for 25%. Have spg amex card
I get this message: Been there, done that. Looks like you already selected 25% off a Starpoints® redemption as your elite gift. Your Award ID is xxxxxx.* Call your local Customer Contact Center to redeem before October 31, 2013.
I used that credit last year. 2014 hasn’t rolled over for me yet?
Last year I got emails with these gifts for gold and platinum without registering for any promo and this year when I didn’t receive a renewal gift for surpassing 25 nights this year I called up SPG and they said there are not doing that promo this year and it doesn’t look like they are replacing it will anything. Are the renewal gifts gone completely?
