Given the rumors around the impending changes on May 1st, I’m refining my card applications for the coming weeks. There appears to be limited time to signup for bonus offers which I’ve received millions of miles and points from in the past. You might be in a similar boat. So we are also giving a chance to win a $100 American Express Gift Card by sharing the card you’d be most likely to apply for by May 1st, 2014.

Potential Changes Coming May 1st
According to unsubstantiated rumors, a certain credit card provider may implement changes on May 1st, that prevents card members from receiving the signup bonus on cards they’ve already had.
This is both discouraging and encouraging at the same time. Encouraging because there is still a few weeks left to apply for, get approved, and received the signup bonus on cards I’ve already had in the past. Discouraging, because it will likely be the last time for a while, to receive the signup bonus offer if the reports are true. So here’s what I’m considering doing…
Strategy – Focus On Cards Previously Held
My focus will be on cards I’ve held in the past, and as a result, received the signup bonus offers on. This means the heavy hitting American Express Membership Rewards cards like the Platinum Card from American Express, could be a good strategy.
Hotel Cards #1 Focus
In particular, I’m focused on both the:
- Starwood Preferred Guest® Credit Card from American Express
- Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card
I’ve had both of these cards in the past, so with the potential new rule, I theoretically wouldn’t receive the bonus again.
I’ll defer to a later date the cash back card offers like the TrueEarnings® Card from Costco and American Express, SimplyCash® Business Card from American Express, Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express because their benefit is mainly in holding the card, at which I can downgrade to at a later date from the cards I have in my wallet currently.
But then there are my business cards. I’m fortunate enough to have several businesses, but if the new rules apply to business cards as well, I’ll have to give consideration to the The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, Business Green Rewards Card from American Express (would do Gold over this one).
Bottom Line
If the impending changes on May 1st come true, card members may not receive bonuses on cards they’ve had in the past. So I’ve you’ve had a particular card in the past and received the bonus offer, now may be a really good time to consider picking up another card before getting another bonus offer on the card is prohibited.
So there you have it, that’s what I’m thinking about for May. How about you? What are your considerations?

I’d apply for the southwest visa so I can transfer the points to my boyfriend for more free flights (he has a companion pass!)
I’d apply for the SPG Amex because I can get a transfer bonus for airline transfers, be eligible for AMEX’s awesome purchase protection benefit, and use the points for hotel stays and/or airline tickets.
I would apply for the Business Gold Rewards card, because I’ve received a targeted offer in the mail with a bigger sign-up bonus.
I would like the SPG AMEX BIZ for the 5% Open discounts!!!
Gold Delta SkyMiles card will give me enough sign up bonus to redeem for a domestic r/t economy ticket.
I’d apply for the Citi Exec Plat 100k to get a free biz class flight to Asia (after 10k min spend)!
Citi Executive AAdvantage Mastercard for the 100k miles. Thinking about taking a trip to Japan and the AA miles would definitely come in handy for booking seats in business or first.
Chase Hyatt card for the 2 free nights. Hopefully can make use of them at the new Park Hyatt New York later this year!
I like the Chase IHG card because it gives an annual free night
Unfortunately, I don’t think I can take advantage of this:
I have both SPG cards right now plus both Hilton cards. I have had the Delta Gold card in the last 12 months. I could go for the Delta Gold Business but I see a time limit of 4/28/14 on the Simply Cash for Business and so that’s the one I will go for to get the $250 back.
I do have a second business but there I had never applied for any AMEX cards (yet) and so this doesn’t apply.
So, my answer is: The SimplyCash Business Card.
I may do nothing, as the rumors may be false. But I also may apply for SPG Amex, as I could use an Amex card. Thanks for the giveaway!
I’m looking to get the Amex personal platinum again – 40K isn’t as exciting as 100K but…
I would get the SPG, as they are one of the most valuable points out there
I’m all over the Amex Personal Rewards Gold. I’ve had it twice before, and the third time will certainly be the charm. The only thing better than a great sign up bonus is getting it more than once!
I’d get the Platinum bc I need more MR points
I think I would aim for the SPG card.
Going to go for the SPG Amex to redeem points on some stays later this year.
I’ll be applying for the Platinum because of the increased signup bonus and still valid Delta access, as well as Global Entry reimbursement.
Citi AA executive MC because of the 100k bonus
I’d go for the Reserve. Lots of perks like MQM when hit spend and, it looks great in my wallet. (nice black finish)
Thaks
I would also go for the Citi AA Executive MasterCard for the 100,000 miles.
I’d like to apply for the Hyatt Visa card. I’ve wanted to visit the Park Hyatt Tokyo forever and probably never would without the two free nights!
Platinum AmEx because of the larger sign up bonus and airline fee reimbursement. And I could always use another amex for sync offers.
I’d apply for the Platinum for the 40k miles, airline credits, and global entry reimbursement, as well as the lounge benefits.
I went with the Discover it card because I wanted access to the Discover cash back portal. Plus a fee free card is always nice to have.
I think I’d consider the Amex Platinum to take advantage of the airline credit and travel benefits.
I’d apply for the Gold Delta Amex because of the 30k bonus points upon minimum spend and $50 airline statement credit!
For those who are considering going for the SPG card again, a lot of people have already been reporting they didn’t receive the full 25k bonus. They’ve instead been receiving only 10k of the points.
Even if there is a chance, 10k SPG points aren’t worth a hard inquiry in my eyes.
Business Gold Rewards Card from American Express OPEN earns 3 miles per dollar on airfare!
I would apply for the SPG AMEX because of the transfer bonus
Chase Hyatt Visa for 2 free nights and no forex fees. And because the Marriott card got devalued hard with all the hotels going up to category 6
Business Platinum would be my choice. The $400 in reimbursement (over 2calendar years) covers most of the cost.
British Airways Visa for me. I value avios the most as I use them for my fiance and me to take short trips within europe.
SPG for me. Transfers to airlines 20k points for 25k miles!
Spg Amex for points at my fav Westin Grand in Vancouver?
In the midst of a refi so no apps till that closes. But when it does, I’d go for the SPG since I have it already.
The Citi AA 100,000 bonus for sure, since it is too many miles to pass up and maybe I can squeak in with a second before the rumors become true!
I’d be interested in applying for Citi AA 100,000 mile bonus. That’s a lot of miles! 🙂
us airways mastercard 40000 miles first purchase/89$
barclays arrival mastercard 40000 miles/ 3000 spent/ fee waived first year
citi executive mastercard 100k miles
I’d get an amex platinum, to get free global entry and tsa precheck. 🙂
Oh and the airline free reumbursement
Having just gotten the Citi AA Executive with the big spend requirement, I’m actually laying low this month. Plus there are no Amex cards I’ve previously had for which I’d be eligible for the welcome bonus even under the current rules.
Barclaycard Arrival: Great sign-up bonus and cash back rate.
Amex SPG card for value of points & transfer options.
I would apply for the SPG Amex card for Starpoints that I can redeem for free nights.
MB Plat AX
Starwood Bus American Express
I would apply for the SPG Amex card because I can transfer points to airline miles and get a 25% bonus at the 20,000 point level.
I’d apply for the SPG Amex because Starwood points are very hard to obtain through other means.
