Threads are cropping up on airliners.net and flyertalk.com saying that Southwest Airlines is going to have a big announcement on October 15, 2104.  There are a few facts about Southwest Airlines and next week, with the biggest being the end of the Wright Amendment which has restricted flights from the Dallas Love Field only to cities in Texas and nearby states since 1980.

Screen Shot 2014-10-06 at 8.57.08 PMCoincidentally, Southwest plans to ‘party the Wright away’ with a ‘Spirit Party’ for employees of Southwest Airlines and AirTran at company headquarters at Love Field at 4pm on October 15 – the rumored date of the big announcement.

The rumors for the big announcement seem to fall into three categories:

  1. Airframes – a 737-900, a 787 Dreamliner, and airliners.net is even discussing Southwest adding the Bombardier Q400
  2. Destinations – increased international service, or maybe starting long rumored Hawaii service
  3. Mergers/Acquisitions – Southwest buying Alaska Airlines or Hawaiian Airlines

Bottom Line:
Last month when there was speculation about Southwest changing its livery, it was true. This month’s new rumors seem kind of like that – rumors.  Are there any rumors about Southwest Airlines that are catching your attention?
