One big caveat you left out:

Rock! I have never purchased an Amazon GC online. Yet I get “The promotional code you entered cannot be applied to your purchase.”
I did buy an Amazon GC at Staples, and have applied it as a credit to the account. I guess that’s another condition then. Oh well….
