American Express Return Protection is an amazing benefit; so, which cards offer Return Protection? It’s no secret that I think that American Express has great customer service. I personally carry several Amex cards and so does Mrs. Weekly Flyer. We recently used American Express Return Protection for the first time and I want to touch on this benefit as I think that is might be way undervalued or forgotten about. This information might especially come in handy with all the holiday purchases that you are making right now!

American Express Return Protection Which Cards Have It?

Many Amex cards have a benefit called Return Protection. So, what is it?

Return Protection offers you an extended return policy on eligible items charged entirely on an eligible American Express® Card. If you try to return an eligible item within 90 days from the date of purchase and the merchant won’t take it back, American Express may refund the full purchase price, up to $300 per item, excluding shipping and handling charges related to the item purchased, and up to a maximum of $1,000 per Card Member account per calendar year based on the date of purchase, not during the year the claim was filed.

Limitations and Exclusions

Purchases must be made in the 50 United States of America, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Palau, Guam and Northern Mariana Islands and charged in full on your eligible Card. A refund will not be paid if, on the date we receive your Return Protection request any amount on your eligible Card account is past due for one or more billing cycle(s) or your Card is canceled. Refunds are limited to $300 per eligible item, and $1,000 per Card Member account per calendar year based on the date of purchase, not during the year the claim was filed. To be eligible, an item must be in the original purchase condition (not visibly used, defective, or damaged in any way) and must be in working order. The merchant from which the item was originally purchased must also have denied an attempted return of the item. Any item purchased from a merchant that has an established return/satisfaction guarantee program which is greater than or equal to the terms of Return Protection, and provides coverage for your claim, will not be eligible for a refund. Product rebates, discounts or money received from lowest price comparison programs will be deducted from the original cost of the item. The maximum you will be compensated will not exceed the amount charged to the eligible Card Account.

In my experience, I was easily able to file for return protection online via my Amex account. In this instance, I had ordered a pair of pants online and they were a final sale (not eligible for return to the store) and they didn’t fit.

Here is how my experience went, the pants didn’t fit; now what do I do with them? Sure, they were a good deal, but I would still like my $30 back. I went on to my Amex account and under benefits filed for return protection for my Delta Reserve Credit Card from American Express. After filling in the essential info, such as date of purchase and item description; I submitted the claim. After about 2 days, Amex emailed me to let me know that my claim was finalized and that I would receive my refund with no further action on my behalf. Wow, that was easy!

Bottom Line

As usual, Amex came through on this. It was very easy to submit for this benefit and I was able to get my money back since the store wouldn’t return the pants. Now, I can donate the pants to charity too since I didn’t need to return them to Amex. Return protection is an awesome benefit and one that I would definitely consider when applying for your next credit card! Are you familiar with Amex Return Protection? Have you used it?
