Delta plans to change the order in which Medallions get upgraded starting April 30, 2016, with those on full Y fares no longer jumping to the top. This is a change in order to provide those who fly Delta the most, a higher change to be upgraded, so I’m actually looking forward to this change.
New Change: Medallion level is now the most important factor in upgrade clearance priority, starting with Diamond Medallion members, then Platinum, Gold and Silver
Other upgrade factors to note as well:
- Delta Reserve Credit Card Members will still have a higher prioritization within the Medallion peer set for upgrades
- Delta corporate partner travelers will now have a higher prioritization within the Medallion peer set for upgrades
- If all else is considered equal, members who have spent at least $25,000 in the current calendar year on their Delta SkyMiles Credit Card from American Express will enjoy higher priority
- Date and time of upgrade request will be used as a tie-breaker
Bottom Line
If you’re a Diamond or Platinum Medallion and have you used to wonder why you’re not higher on the upgrade list, it could of been because of lower level Medallions booking full Y fares and being upgraded, so with this new ordering that shouldn’t happen now.

This is more about taking away an upgrade from those who have paid the most in the hope that they will pay some more for an upgrade. It has nothing to do with giving more benefits to Elites and everything to do with making more money for Delta.
If the Amex spend is for current year, as stated, precedence will change as year progresses. Would seem more equitable to base on previous year Amex spend.
