Chase Cards What Counts As Travel 3x Category?
So what counts as travel for these 3x and 2x points categories?
Merchants in the travel category include:
- airlines,
- hotels,
- motels,
- timeshares,
- car rental agencies,
- cruise lines,
- travel agencies,
- discount travel sites,
- campgrounds and
- operators of passenger trains, buses, taxis, limousines, ferries, toll bridges and highways, and parking lots and garages.
What is not included?
Please note that some merchants that provide transportation and travel-related services are not included in this category;
- for example, real estate agents, educational merchants arranging travel, in-flight goods and services, on-board cruise line goods and services, sightseeing activities, excursions, tourist attractions, merchants within hotels and airports, and merchants that rent vehicles for the purpose of hauling.
- In addition, the purchasing of gift cards, points or miles does not qualify in this category unless the merchant has set up such purchases to be classified in the travel category.
Bottom LineÂ
Both the Chase Sapphire Reserve® –  Learn More Hereand the Chase Sapphire Preferred® credit card– Learn More Here are great to use for travel expenses because of this bonus category. But, there are something that don’t count. Hopefully, you can book mark this post and come back to it the next time you have a question about if it will count or not.
I charged a VRBO condo on my CSR thinking I’d get 3X UR points. Wrong! Any idea why timeshares qualify but VRBO doesn’t? If I’d known the charge wouldn’t qualify, I would have put it on my CFU to a t least get 1.5 UR points.
For some reason, Chase does not consider sailing in the travel category. Had to open Citi Premier to earn 3x on charters!
Ed,
Years ago I called Chase and they did a courtesy correction of points for vrbo on my sapphire preferred card. Worth a try.
@Donna – Thanks! I’ll give that a try.
@Donna – I learned that Chase does not give 3X UR points for VRBO vacation rentals that are owned or managed by real estate companies. Weird, that had I rented from an individual owned condo in the same complex it would have earned 3X UR points. Very disappointing.
