Redeeming Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Miles for Delta Flights

American Express is offering a 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic Flying Club now through July 1, 2019. If you’re looking for ways to maximize this, you’ll want to consider booking Delta flights.

Virgin Atlantic has a partnership with Delta Air Lines, meaning redeeming miles on Delta is fairly easy to do.  Flights operated by Virgin Atlantic and booked with Flying Club miles typically have high fuel surcharges and fees that make them not ideal.  Flights operated by Delta have substantially lower fees and some of the lowest redemption rates.

Some examples include 120,000 miles for a roundtrip in Delta One from the US to Africa and 100,000 miles for flights from the US to Europe. If you don’t fly have Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles, they are a transfer partner of both American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards.

To book a flight with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles, first visit www.virginatlantic.comto start the search. When enter in the desired trip details, click the advanced search to see additional options. This will present a dropdown with the payment method and cabin of service. For flights paid entirely with miles, select “miles†or if you don’t have enough miles, consider using “miles plus money.â€

Considering searching a destination or origin point that that Delta operates direct flights on. These include New York (JFK), Atlanta (ATL), Detroit (DTW), Minneapolis (MSP), Salt Lake City (SLC) Seattle (SEA), and Los Angeles (LAX).  Delta Air Lines must have partner award space open on the route for the flight to be booked with Virgin Atlantic Flying Club Miles.

Virgin Atlantic has a helpful flexible booking tool to make finding availability easier. The calendar will show which have award flights and the total price for the redemption.

After determining dates that work best for your travel plans, select them on the calendar for a list of flight options. Depending on the route and day of travel, Delta may only have one flight to pick.

Select the flight to continue the checkout process and see a full summary of flight details. If you are trying to book an international flight from a non-Delta hub city, it may be helpful to search one-way flights for each leg of the trip. Overall, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club miles have the best redemption when used through partners to avoid the high fuel surcharges and fees.

The award redemption rates are quite competitive when compared against other frequent flier programs. As with all award bookings, the best practices including being flexibility with dates and destination and staying persistent when finding availability.
