A few years ago, Delta launched a new feature to allow SkyMiles members to buy premium products post-purchase upgrades using SkyMiles. On a recent flight from Atlanta to Savannah, I was offered to upgrade to first class for 6,900 SkyMiles each-way, so I decided to take Delta up on this offer on the outbound to test out their latest upgrade option.
Upon upgrading with miles after booking, I was confirmed in the First Class cabin into a Z class fare, however the ticket wasn’t reissued as the receipt still showed the X fare class. Fast forward to the flight and afterwards and sure enough I did earn the 50% MQM Bonus for the seat upgrade.
Given Delta doesn’t have the best IT in place, I was hesitant that this ticket would earn the extra Medallion Qualification Miles, but as reflected in my SkyMiles account, I did earn an additional 250 MQMs.
This is in line with what Delta says:
Upgraded tickets are eligible for additional mileage, Medallion Qualification Miles and Medallion Qualification Dollars accruals upon selection of Delta Comfort+ or First Class/Delta One and associated fare classes, and the increase in base fare or carrier-imposed surcharges paid in connection with your upgrade.
