Starting November 1, 2019, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey will be increasing the price of the AirTrain to $7.75 each way at both John. F Kennedy International Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport. Previously, JFK charged $5 whereas Newark cost $5.50, so both represent drastic increases from the old pricing.
As a reminder if you’re just using the AirTrain to get from one terminal to another, there’s no charge it’s only if you’re getting on/off at Jamaica and Howard Beach Stations for JFK, or at the Newark Airport Liberty Station for EWR.
Per Gothamist,
The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey approved a round of fare hikes on Thursday that will impact Hudson River crossings, taxi drop offs at airports, Air Trains and bridges.
AirTrain fares at Newark and JFK airports will go up from the current price of $5 to $7.75, starting November 1, 2019.
Starting October 3rd, 2020, For Hire Vehicles (Uber, Lyft, etc.) will pay $2.50 to pick up and drop off at airports, while taxis will pay $1.25. The fee for taxis will go up to $1.75 on October 1, 2022.
The funds generated from this increased revenue will be put toward Port Authority airports, repairing bridges, as well as the new bus terminal in Midtown.
The Port Authority is just doing this so people visiting NYC can get the real New York experience of what it is to live in NYC. The Port Authority reckons that people visiting a area always love to get that area’s real vibe. This is to add to the NYC vibe of unhappiness, rude customer service and dirty conditions everywhere. But we all know that NYC is worth the high prices because entering the NYC vibe is so worth it.
The 10 ride AirTrain pass for $25.00 remains the same price and is not included in the price increase.
Hrm, is there only a 10 ride card for JFK and not EWR AirTrain?
Ever wonder why people take Uber/Lyft from the airport? If you’ve got 2 people, its about the same price and can save a lot of time (outside of rush hour)
